Emery won't shift blame to men for Wolves debacle
LONDON ̢ۢ Unai Emery refused to give up on Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after seeing his men embarrassed by Wolves in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux on Wednesday.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota all scored in the first half to condemn the Gunners to a third defeat in four games, severely denting their hopes of a top-four finish with just three games to go.
While the Arsenal manager Emery admitted that his fifth-placed team (66 points) were outplayed, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a consolation, he insisted they would continue to fight for Champions League football next season. They are in a battle with Tottenham (70 points), Chelsea (67) and Manchester United (64) for two spots in Europe's top club competition.
After their seventh away loss, with just a clean sheet this term, he was asked whether he would have harsh words with his players.
He said: "I am usually very critical with myself and I am angry with myself that we didn't do the game plan, (but) not with the players.
"First, it is with me and after that, my style and idea is to look in front and find a solution, not who is the player who is worst.
"The solution for me is... on Sunday at Leicester, (we) get our best performance and the best possibility to take the three points."
Wolves, who are seventh and remain on course for their best finish since their sixth place in 1980, were clinical in their finishing.
But Arsenal's wounds were also to a large extent self-inflicted - no thanks to careless passing, brittle defending and an erratic display of goalkeeping from Bernd Leno, who was culpable for the hosts' second and third goals.
Emery refused to criticise his No. 1, adding: "I don't want to speak individually about the players. We need to recover our confidence."

CARDIFF ̢ۢ Before the match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about how he will employ techniques used by former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson to make full use of the talent in the squad, particularly in England duo Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.
"Make these players play, you can't say it's an easy job, but it's a privilege to have that talent and make them express themselves," said the United caretaker manager.
Express themselves they did, and in emphatic fashion, too.
Rashford and Lingard both started and got on the scoresheet as the Red Devils gave Solskjaer the perfect start to his temporary reign with a 5-1 victory at Cardiff on Saturday, just days after replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho.
Call it coincidence if you like, but United scored five goals in a Premier League game for the first time since Ferguson's final game in May 2013.
"Football is easy if you've got good players," Solskjaer told BT Sport. "They are a great bunch of players and their quality is unbelievable."
And it was not only Ferguson whom Solskjaer drew inspiration from. The 45-year-old also revealed that a few words of encouragement from United's record goalscorer Wayne Rooney helped breathe new life into the stagnating club.
"I arrived on Wednesday night and had only Thursday and Friday with the players. Wayne Rooney texted me and gave me some advice - so it must be down to him!" said Solskjaer with a laugh.
"He told me to make them play football, enjoy themselves and be Manchester United."
Rashford opened the scoring with a free kick in the third minute and a goal from Ander Herrera just before the half-hour mark gave them a 2-0 lead.
Cardiff pulled a goal back through a Victor Camarasa penalty in the 38th minute, but Anthony Martial restored the two-goal margin minutes later and two goals from Jesse Lingard in the second half added gloss to the scoreline.
The Norwegian said he had worked on patterns of play and focused on getting full-backs Ashley Young and Luke Shaw to push higher up the pitch.
"Your work rate is the easiest thing to work on. It is free. It is the attitude and application of the boys," he said.
"If we approach all the games like this - and we want them to approach them all like this - with combination play and playing the ball forward, then I'll be happy."
Rooney was delighted to see how Solskjaer managed to get the United players, who had looked shackled and careworn under Mourinho, to feel liberated enough to attack with pace and panache.
"It's a fantastic day for the club. Manchester United's a big part of my life and it was never nice watching what was going on," said Rooney. "The players obviously looked a bit restricted (under Mourinho). The players have ability and today we've seen that.
"A lot of things were happening around the team and around the manager, which isn't good. Ole's given them that freedom."
That was certainly evident from the comments of United's rejuvenated young players, who were not shy in noting how Solskjaer had given them far more licence to express themselves.
Lingard said: "The lads played with a lot of energy, enjoyment and excitement. When you've got confidence, you put yourselves in positions to score goals.
"That's what we did. We were playing higher and the full-backs were higher. We pinned them back and created a lot of chances."
Rashford added: "He (Solskjaer) wants us to be positive on the ball and always look for the gaps. That was just the start. We're going to improve and get better at it."
Victory also sees United close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to eight points, thanks to the Blues' 1-0 home defeat by Leicester earlier in the day.
"We're eight points behind, so our job is to take one game at a time," added Solskjaer, whose team host Huddersfield on Boxing Day.
"We always play well in the second half of the season."

ROME (AFP) - An Inter Milan supporter died on Thursday morning (Dec 27) after being hit by a vehicle during clashes with Napoli fans on Wednesday before the Serie A match between the two teams at the San Siro.
Milan police chief Marcello Cadorna told journalists that the incident happened after around 100 Inter fans attacked Napoli supporters' minibuses with chains and hammers.
Cadorna, himself a former Serie A referee, said that four Napoli fans were injured in the "despicable and absolutely impossible to prevent" attack.
In the ensuing confusion, Inter fan Daniele Belardinelli, 35, was hit by a vehicle, likely a dark SUV and not one of the Napoli minibuses, according to mobile phone footage of the incident, Cadorna said.
Inter fans carried Belardinelli to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries despite being operated on.
"You can't die for a football game," said far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, adding that he would summon fan organisations for talks in January.
Police arrested three Inter fans over the violence, Cadorna said.
Inter Milan won the match 1-0, as Napoli had two players sent off late on.
The game was marred by racist chanting towards Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, with the away side asking for the match to be halted after the 27-year-old Senegalese international was repeatedly subjected to monkey noises.
The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, made a public apology on Thursday, describing the racist chanting as a "shameful act" and asking Koulibaly's forgiveness.

LONDON ̢ۢ The four-point lead Liverpool have at the top of the Premier League even after a 2-1 defeat by rivals Manchester City on Thursday was still impressive given their lack of title-winning experience, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.
The match in Manchester was billed by many as an early title decider, where a Liverpool victory would have given them a 10-point lead at the top with 17 games to go, having played City home and away.
However, goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane, either side of a Roberto Firmino equaliser, ended Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League start and moved City to 50 points and within touching distance of top spot.
"I have so much faith in (my) players you cannot imagine," Klopp said.
"If somebody would have said after both games against Man City that we would have had a four-point lead, I would have paid good money for this, as I thought it was not possible.
"If we would have won the title five times in the last 10 years, then things would be different. We don't have the experience like this. We are still in a very good position so I am happy for this.
"I knew that City could beat us, that is not new. They beat us 5-0 last year. It did not have anything to do with mental strength on one side or the other. It was just unlucky."
Klopp was also unhappy with one decision that did not go his side's way, when City captain Vincent Kompany received only a yellow card for a lunge at Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
"Situations like this happen. A player goes to ground, and he took the risk. If Mo is on his feet, not jumping, then we all know what happen. Mo can go through," he said.
"Kompany saw him, hit him, and you can make your own opinion."
Despite the loss, former Liverpool captains Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher believe the Merseyside club still have the advantage in the Premier League title race.
"Liverpool are in great shape," Souness told Sky Sports. "Ask both managers what position you'd rather be in right now.
"You're going to take the four points sitting top of the league, especially with the run-in that Liverpool have."
Having played Arsenal and City back-to-back, Liverpool do not play another top-six side until Feb 24 when they travel to Manchester United.
Carragher also echoed Souness' sentiments and alluded to Liverpool's recent form against teams outside the top six.
"The form they have shown, certainly against sides outside the top six, they have got a lot of those games coming," the former defender said.
"Four points clear is still a really good position to be in. Liverpool just need to relax, get some wins under their belt, maybe improve that lead if they can over the next month to six weeks."

Kane's 26th-minute spot kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino's side will be slight favourites to reach the final although there is plenty of work still to do.
The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty with the help of VAR after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Kane tucked away the penalty with his usual aplomb to move fourth, above Cliff Jones, on Tottenham's all-time list of goalscorers.
Chelsea, who were far better than in their 3-1 Premier League defeat to Tottenham in November, could count themselves unlucky though as they twice hit the woodwork before the break and completely dominated the second half.
Tottenham had to defend desperately at times and keeper Paulo Gazzaniga was forced into making several sharp saves.
The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on Jan 24.

LONDON ̢ۢ This encapsulated Chelsea's bizarre campaign of extremes.
There had been heckles from the home support as the players went into the interval with the hosts fortunate still to be level, all the festering doubts over Maurizio Sarri's stewardship exposed yet again, only for those jeers to be choked within the opening few minutes of the restart by a taunting of Tottenham.

For once, Sarri's half-time team talk had instigated an immediate upturn with Eden Hazard, previously peripheral, revived and Ruben Loftus-Cheek injecting urgency to Chelsea's approach.
The England midfielder had headed the hosts ahead, reaching Hazard's gloriously clipped cross to power his effort beyond Ben Foster. Within minutes, David Luiz sprinted late into the box to meet Hazard's corner and effectively complete the victory. Even Gonzalo Higuain, so desperately ponderous in his play up to the interval, chipped in an exquisite third.
Higuain, Olivier Giroud and Pedro might have added further plunder as a side who had initially appeared so deflated tore into the FA Cup finalists with relish.
There is no fathoming Chelsea's form at present. They are wildly unpredictable but, according to the Premier League table, the third best team in the country at present.

SYDNEY ̢ۢ Australia's professional female footballers secured a landmark pay rise yesterday that will see them receive the same minimum wage as their male counterparts in a win for gender equality.
Under a new collective bargaining agreement unveiled on the eve of the World Cup in France, the base annual pay for players in the W-League was hiked 33 per cent to A$16,344 (S$15,560).
Their season is much shorter than the A-League but, pro-rata, it matches the men's minimum salary.
Australia has emerged as a champion for equality in the sports arena, with netballers and women cricketers also winning better pay deals in recent years.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) hailed the move as "an outcome that delivers on the gender equity principle of same base pay for same base work".
The deal means that players in both leagues will receive the "same minimum remuneration hourly rate", said FFA Head of Leagues Greg O'Rourke.
Up until two years ago, many players in the W-League were considered amateur and received only expense reimbursements, but that changed in 2017 when they won better employment conditions.
