Football: Kane fires Spurs into Champions League quarter-finals

DORTMUND, Germany (AFP) - Harry Kane fired Tottenham Hotspur into the Champions League quarter-finals as his winning goal at Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday's (March 5) return leg sealed a 1-0 victory to wrap up a 4-0 aggregate success.
On Monday, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino had demanded they "finish the job" after beating the Bundesliga leaders 3-0 in the first leg at Wembley.
His Spurs side delivered, soaking up everything Dortmund threw at them in a one-sided first half before Kane's goal just after the break killed off the hosts' spirited challenge.
"It's always difficult in these type of games, you don't know whether to defend or attack," said Kane, who singled out Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for praise after a string of key saves.
"They had a few moments. In that first half we needed everyone, defenders blocking it, Hugo saving it, that's what Champions League is about - you need everybody."
This is the first time Tottenham are in the last eight of the Champions League since 2010/11 when they bowed out 5-0 on aggregate to Real Madrid.
Needing to score at least three goals, Dortmund packed their line-up with forwards as Mario Goetze, Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer - who have scored 30 goals between them - all started together for the first time this season.
Dortmund flew out of the traps, pounding the Spurs defence with 10 attempts in the first half alone, restricting the Londoners to a single Son Heung-min effort, and enjoying 70 percent possession.
"We have showed that we have the quality, we can build on the first-half performance, but we need to score goals," said Dortmund captain Reus.
The Germans harassed Spurs at every opportunity and had two clear chances in the opening 25 minutes as Alcacer fired just over, while Lloris snaffled a stinging Reus shot at the second attempt.
Tottenham's first real chance came with half an hour gone when Son got in behind his marker Marius Wolf and fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
Lloris then pulled off two saves at point-blank range before palming Goetze's shot over the bar shortly before the break.

KANE LANDS FATAL BLOW

Having defended doggedly, Spurs took the lead when Kane scored with his first chance and only his team's second of the game.
His run split the hosts' centre-backs, as he latched onto Moussa Sissoko's pass and curled his shot past Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki.
The video assistant referee confirmed Kane was on-side and his goal on 49 minutes subdued the crowd at Signal Iduna Park who had hoped for a miracle.
With the tempo having dropped, Spurs' Pochettino brought on Eric Dier, back from injury, to beef up the midfield in place of Harry Winks for the final 35 minutes.
Spurs seemed content to absorb Dortmund's attacks while countering on the few opportunities they had.
In a bid to boost flagging confidence, Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre brought on Chelsea-bound Christian Pulisic and Danish forward Jacob Bruun Larsen for the final half an hour.
With Reus tiring, unsurprisingly after four weeks out with a thigh injury, Thomas Delaney came on for the Dortmund skipper with 17 minutes left.
Sissoko attempted to win a late penalty and Kane put the ball into Dortmund's net but was flagged for offside as the game petered out and home fans started slipping away.
While Spurs go marching into the last eight, Dortmund can focus on trying to prevent Bayern Munich winning a seventh straight Bundesliga title with just goal difference currently separating the sides.

Football: Teenager sinks mighty Gunners

LONDON • After all the fuss over Marko Arnautovic's future, the limelight belonged to a local lad who places his love of the game above the riches that are surely going to come his way.
The script seemed to demand an audacious performance from Arnautovic but instead the day belonged to Declan Rice, who sealed West Ham's 1-0 Premier League win over Arsenal with his first goal for the club.
The midfielder, who turns 20 tomorrow, also earned his side a deserved first home victory over the Gunners in 13 years after scoring in the 48th minute yesterday.
Unsurprisingly, he spoke excitedly about his "special moment" after the match, telling Sky Sports: "I can't put it into words. I was in the box, I took it on, it went in the top corner and we beat Arsenal."
He played like a seasoned professional against Arsenal, frustrating Unai Emery's side time and again with a series of well-timed interventions in defensive midfield, and displayed his outstanding technique when he settled a tight encounter with a fine shot.
"Declan Rice is improving. In the future he will be a top, top player," said West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.
"I was pleased with the consistency of the team. We didn't allow Arsenal to create chances. We played with the mentality of a big team. We have to try to work and play in the same way all the time."

Points Arsenal have taken from their five-match winless run in the Premier League, with two draws and three losses.

Awkward financial realities dominated the conversation before the London derby.
While it was disconcerting for Arsenal's fans to hear Emery say he can only afford to make loan signings this month, West Ham have been confronted by Arnautovic's desire to accept a lucrative offer from an unidentified Chinese club.
Ever the showman, Arnautovic had bleached his hair for the occasion. Yet this was a subdued performance from the Austrian striker and the greater threat emanated from Emery's forwards during the early stages.

But the visitors faded after a bright start and it was impossible not to feel that Arsenal have got themselves into an unenviable bind when it comes to their playmaker Mesut Ozil, who did not even merit a place on the bench.
Emery made his feelings clear about Ozil before kick-off, insisting that the German's absence from yet another awkward away assignment was a tactical decision, but it is an unsatisfactory situation from the club's perspective.
They are crying out for elite talents and their biggest earner, a player on £350,000 (S$608,000) a week, is not rated by his manager.
For all of Ozil's inconsistencies, the Gunners needed a player of his class and invention, as former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri duly demonstrated.
The 31-year-old, rebuilding his career at West Ham after a doping ban, was at the heart of much of the Hammers' best work on his Premier League debut for the club.
It was the Frenchman's neat lay-off that allowed Rice the space to curl a superb shot past Bernd Leno.
Arsenal have now lost three of their last four away matches in the league and Emery admitted it is a worry, with sixth-placed Manchester United just three points behind before their match at Tottenham Hotspur today.
"It is a concern. We need to be competitive both home and away. Away, we are not taking the results we want," the Spaniard said.
"If we can be better in the 90 minutes - competitive and quality - we can do it."

Football: Deulofeu hat-trick fires Watford to 5-1 win at Cardiff

LONDON (REUTERS) - Spaniard Gerard Deulofeu bagged a hat-trick as Watford hammered lowly Cardiff City 5-1 on Friday (Feb 22) to move up to seventh place in the Premier League.
Deulofeu put Javi Gracia's side ahead in the 18th minute after a mistake from Cardiff defender Bruno Manga but it was after the break when Watford ran away with the game.
Deulofeu made it 2-0 with a clinical finish after a swift break in the 61st minute and the former Barcelona and Everton winger completed his hat-trick after more poor defending from Neil Warnock's side.
Deulofeu then turned creator, teeing up Troy Deeney for a simple tap-in as Watford romped into a four-goal advantage.
Cardiff, who are 17th and could fall back into the bottom three after this weekend's games, pulled a goal back through defender Sol Bamba but Watford added further punishment with Deeney's second in stoppage time.

Tottenham Hotspur date for Singapore

A Hurri-Kane will hit Singapore shores in July as English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur announced yesterday that their first team, headlined by England captain Harry Kane, will visit the Republic as part of their pre-season tour.
While the 25-year-old striker is currently nursing an ankle injury, he could return at the end of this month to boost third-placed Spurs' title hopes. They are five points behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
Besides Kane, other Spurs stars expected to feature prominently are France's World Cup-winning skipper and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, England midfielder Dele Alli and South Korean sensation Son Heung-min.
Tottenham said in a statement yesterday: "We are delighted to announce that the first-team squad will travel to Singapore and Shanghai as part of our pre-season tour in July in preparation for the 2019-20 season.
"The tour will also enable us to join in the Centennial celebrations of our Global Principal Partner, AIA, whose roots trace back to Shanghai in 1919.
"The visit also affords the club the opportunity to engage with our millions of fans across Asia including Official Supporters Clubs in both countries in which we will be playing fixtures."
Spurs are set to be among the four teams - one more than the last two years - who are pencilled in for the International Champions Cup (ICC) at the National Stadium in July.
Premier League giants Manchester United are also all but confirmed for the tournament, while negotiations are ongoing to add Italy's Juventus and Inter Milan to the line-up.
The ICC is set to be held over the July 19-21 weekend, with just two games instead of the previous three.
Although the fixtures will be confirmed only on March 27, the weekend scheduling should attract more fans to the National Stadium.
Spurs last visited Singapore in 1995 when they lost 4-2 on penalties to the Lions after a 1-1 draw.
Tours to Asia are not new to the London side as they were also in Beijing for the 2009 Premier League Asia Trophy and Hong Kong for the 2013 edition. They also played in Malaysia in 2015 and Hong Kong in 2017.
Die-hard Spurs fan Fabius Chen, a 33-year-old public servant, said: "I was there as a kid in 1995 and it was the first time I watched them in person. My favourite player at the time was Darren Anderton and I have never forgotten Singapore goalkeeper David Lee saving his spot-kick in the shoot-out.
"I'll be there again in July because as a fan from Singapore, chances to see the team live are few and far between.
"I hope manager Mauricio Pochettino and defender Toby Alderweireld will still be at the club then.
"I'm also looking forward to seeing a few new faces who can hopefully take the team further next season, a couple of future stars like striker Troy Parrott, and definitely a better result than the last time they were here."

Football: Liverpool staying positive despite blip, says Klopp

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp has vowed that Liverpool will remain positive as they battle for the Premier League title despite a wobble that has enabled Manchester City to seize the initiative.
Liverpool's destiny is no longer in their own hands after a goalless draw in Sunday's Merseyside derby allowed Pep Guardiola's City to regain top spot with a one-point advantage.
Despite criticism over a lack of creativity, the club have notched five successive clean sheets in all competitions and a Premier League-best 17 shut-outs this season, with just 15 goals conceded in 29 matches.
Liverpool, who have not won the English top-flight since 1990, have drawn four out of their past six league games, leading to suggestions that may be feeling the nerves.
However, with nine matches left to play, Klopp insists his side are not willing to give up hopes of a successful finale to the campaign.
"We are positive - how couldn't we be positive?" he told liverpoolfc.com.
"There is a lot to come and a lot of games to play. What brought us here was the stability the boys showed. We are difficult to beat, which is very important in football. And we created, still, in difficult games, which is very important in football.
"Then you have to finish them off, which we did very often but not (at Everton).
"The dynamic (at the top of the table) changed a little bit - now we are second, they are first. The season is not over and we will not give up."

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Spanish LaLiga's organising body has said it does not expect president Javier Tebas to jump ship to the Premier League, responding to British media reports that the Spaniard has emerged as a candidate to become the English top flight's chief executive.
"We are not aware of this supposed interest. That said, if a competition as important as the Premier League is taking note of the work being done by LaLiga, including its president, clubs and employees, it is a source of pride for the entire organisation," a LaLiga spokesman said on Wednesday (Feb 20).
"Javier has a contract with LaLiga and not only is he happy here, he also has responsibilities and challenges which occupy his full attention. This includes the changing broadcast landscape and battling the threat of new competitions - including format changes that put domestic leagues at risk."
The Premier League has struggled to find a successor to long-serving chief executive Richard Scudamore, who stepped down last December after 19 years with the organisation.
Susanna Dinnage, a senior executive at media organisation Discovery, was named as the new chief executive last November but later announced she would not be taking up the role.
Tebas, 56, made headlines by pledging last August to play one LaLiga game per season overseas, although a bid to stage Girona's game against Barcelona in Miami last month fell through after Barca withdrew from it, citing a lack of consensus.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reiterated how he wants to be more than a caretaker manager at Manchester United after matching a venerable feat only ever performed at the club by its most revered patriarch - the late, great Matt Busby.
"Of course I won't, I don't want to," said the ever-smiling Norwegian on Wednesday (Jan 2), when asked after United's 2-0 win at Newcastle United whether he would want to leave Old Trafford in May at the end of his planned interim spell.
And after a startling opening to his reign following Jose Mourinho's sacking continued with a fourth successive win - something only Busby, in 1946, could boast among United managers - he is making a compelling application for the full-time role.
Sounding uncannily like his old insatiable United mentor Alex Ferguson, the former striker reckoned he had already consigned to history the idea of having emulated Busby, who went on to win a fifth consecutive game at the infancy of his epic reign.
"That will be in the books, but it's nothing that I'm thinking of," said Solskjaer.
"I'm just thinking about the next game because if you win four, you can win another four at this club. That's the challenge and that's the standard that we're known for.
"The gaffer (Ferguson) used to challenge us on them and of course when we've won four, you can go onto the next four and think about them."
There has been much media speculation that United want Mourinho's permanent replacement next season to be Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri but if he carries on in his current vein, Solskjaer could make life very awkward for the club hierarchy.
For, with United looking reinvigorated and Solskjaer reprising the old Midas touch that famously saw him come off the bench against Bayern Munich to win the Champions League for United in 1999, he must still know the impossible is possible.
On Wednesday, the one-time 'super sub' even showed he still had the knack of recognising exactly the time to strike when he brought on Romelu Lukaku at 0-0 and saw the Belgian score with his first touch within 38 seconds.
Asked if it gave him particular pleasure that Lukaku should strike, gobbling up the rebound after Marcus Rashford's free kick had been spilled, he shrugged that it had not.
"No, I just felt it was time to put Rom and Alexis (Sanchez) on (as substitutes) and of course it was a great hit by Marcus and Romelu does his job as a striker to be following in on the rebound."
Once again, he enthused about how much he was enjoying his role and said there would be space in his United revolution for both the rejuvenated Rashford, who scored the second, and Lukaku to shine.
"It's such a great bunch of players, a fantastic atmosphere, but it's 'the next game, it's the next game, it's the next game' and I'm doing my job as long as I'm here," he said.
If he is to make it five league wins on the trot, like Busby managed back in 1946, Solskjaer's first major test will come when United face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Jan 13.

Newly appointed Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he wants to see his players "enjoying their football again" while promising them a "clean slate" under his watch. Former United forward Solskjaer was announced as Jose Mourinho's temporary successor on Wednesday, a day after the Portuguese was sacked at Old Trafford
