The City academy product Trippier's corner led to Fernando Llorente's decider on Wednesday, but only after Sterling gave him a torrid time. Trippier did not get close enough to his England teammate for either of his two goals. And, if Leroy Sane starts on the left, it is worth remembering he tormented Trippier at the Etihad Stadium last season.De Bruyne has five assists in his last two games. He got three on Wednesday when he was astoundingly good and played like a man possessed. Alli, with a broken hand, was forced into a deeper role after Moussa Sissoko came off and, instead of breaking forward himself, may have to spend much of his time tracking de Bruyne again.

Football: Careless United undone by Messi double as Barca cruise into semis

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi pounced on two Manchester United mistakes to score twice and end their hopes of another Camp Nou comeback as Barcelona breezed into the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday (April 16).
After an excellent start, United were undone twice in four minutes by Messi, who first nicked the ball off the careless Ashley Young and then watched as a weak shot from distance squirmed underneath David de Gea.
Philippe Coutinho, in perhaps his best performance of the season, added a third with a curling effort into the top corner and by the end, an outclassed United might have been relieved the score was not more traumatic than 3-0, 4-0 on aggregate.
A dizzying opening spell, in which Marcus Rashford had hit the crossbar, was long-forgotten, even if it could offer Barcelona's next opponents some encouragement.
Liverpool, who take a 2-0 lead to Porto on Wednesday, are the most likely obstacle between Barca and their first Champions League final since they last won this tournament in 2015. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane might feel encouraged.
Instead, United's pair of early errors made this another night about Messi and ensured any faint hopes of repeating the comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, or even the famous 1999 rescue act against Bayern Munich, on this same pitch, were dashed.
Messi now has his 109th and 110th Champions League goals and, potentially, three extra matches to reduce the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo's 126, after Juventus were dumped out by Ajax. Barcelona's fans celebrated that too.
United's coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had urged his strikers to be more lethal here but it felt ominous that even before kick-off, Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez had hit 42 goals this season, while Messi on his own had 43.
Around an hour before kick-off, Alex Ferguson was on the side of the pitch, shaking hands with Ryan Giggs and sharing words with Solskjaer, the scorer of that goal against Munich here 20 years ago.
They could have hardly have asked for a better start. United were brilliant for eight minutes and could have been ahead within 30 seconds as Rashford raced onto a curving Paul Pogba pass and toed away a shot, which Marc-Andre ter Stegen bravely left to graze his own crossbar.

Magic Messi

Barca were flustered, so much so the crowd even cheered with relief when Arthur Melo played his team's first convincing pass.
Then, Barcelona had their own eight-minute flurry as United almost conceded a penalty, ruled out after Fred took the ball before bringing down Ivan Rakitic, and then did concede, twice, to Messi.
Both could have been avoided, even if Young's turn on the edge of his own box was punished in devastating fashion. Young lunged in to atone for his mistake but Messi skipped away from him, poked it through Fred's legs and then whipped the ball past into the corner.
The second was simpler. Fred and Scott McTominay closed in on Coutinho and the ball spilled out to Messi, whose dribbling shot with his right foot should have drawn a routine save. Instead, De Gea let is squirm under his body for 2-0.
Pogba lashed out at the increasingly influential Arthur and Barca could have had a third before half-time, De Gea scrambling across to save on the line when Sergi Roberto should have finished.
Messi could have had his hat-trick too after Luis Suarez found him with a superb cutback and there was an almost comical sequence in the second half when the Argentinian played with his United chasers before finally being bundled over by McTominay.
Rashford might have made it interesting if he had controlled Pogba's ball over the top but Barcelona were in exhibition mode, helped by a vintage Coutinho curler after he had cut inside from the left.
Messi even attempted a bicycle kick and there were celebrations from the home fans when news went round that Ajax had taken the lead in Turin. They believe this is their year.

Mourinho says 'United is the past' but will coach again

LONDON • Jose Mourinho, sacked as manager of Manchester United on Tuesday, has confirmed that he would return to management.
He also insisted that his United career was a closed chapter in his first remarks since his removal.
United sacked the Portuguese after having suffered their worst start to a Premier League season for 28 years and replaced him with former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season.
"Manchester United have a future without me and I have a future without United," Mourinho told Sky Sports yesterday.
"Why should I be sharing (my feelings) more now? Even with the supporters, it's over. That's the way I've always been.
"I've been critical of managers that leave clubs and speak about what's happened and who's to blame. That's not me. I just want to finish like it happened yesterday and I'd like to say it's game over. I hope you media respect this way for me to be.
"Until I get back to football, I have my right to live my normal life. That's what I want to do. United is the past."

Manchester United have to pay in compensation to Tottenham should they appoint Mauricio Pochettino.

The former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss said he would retain positive memories of his time at Old Trafford and not focus on what went wrong.
"You know me. I don't change, what I did when I left Chelsea is the same as what I'm going to do now," he added. "I keep the good things and I don't speak about anything that happened in the club... It's finished."
Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen to be considered as the permanent successor, according to The Times, with United targeting him to take over for the long term.

It is understood he wants to be considered for the job, though it would cost United £34 million (S$58.9 million) in compensation.
The Argentinian, whose contract expires in 2023, has gained plaudits for his attacking style of play, bringing through youngsters from the academy and the results his teams have achieved.
Despite his attachment to Spurs and good working relationship with chairman Daniel Levy, he is understood to be frustrated by the lack of backing he has received in the transfer market.
He is also vexed by the club's tightly controlled wage structure, their failure to offload unwanted players and delays to the opening of their new stadium.

Football: Barnsley file formal complaint against Fleetwood's Joey Barton over alleged assault on rival boss

LONDON (AFP) - Third-tier English side Barnsley issued a formal complaint to the Football League and the Football Association on Tuesday (April 16) over Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton's alleged assault on his counterpart Daniel Stendel.
Barton is reported to have confronted Stendel in the tunnel following Barnsley's 4-2 victory last Saturday that all but ended Fleetwood's hopes of reaching the play-offs in what is his first season in charge.
Barnsley player Cauley Woodrow tweeted in the immediate aftermath that Barnsley's German manager had been "physically assaulted" and left with "blood pouring from his face".
He later deleted the tweet.
Barton was captured on TV being prevented by a police officer from leaving the stadium car park. Barnsley said they were helping police but had also decided to go to the football authorities.
"Barnsley Football Club can confirm that it has lodged a formal complaint to both the English Football League and the Football Association," said a club statement.
"This is following an alleged incident at the conclusion of the match on Saturday 13th April, between Joey Barton and Daniel Stendel.
"The club is also currently working with the police and assisting with all enquiries regarding the incident. No further comment will be issued whilst police investigations are ongoing."
Barton was a surprise choice when Fleetwood appointed him last year in what was his first foray into management.
The 36-year-old was a talented but volatile midfielder who was embroiled in a few scraps, on and off the pitch, during his playing days.
He won one England cap during a career that saw him play for a host of clubs including Manchester City and Marseille. His playing career ended at Burnley in 2017.

Barton's chequered career has seen him banned for 18 months after he was investigated for placing 1,260 bets on football matches between 2006 and 2016.
In May 2008, he was jailed for six months over a late-night attack on a man and a teenage boy in the centre of his home city of Liverpool.
In July that year he was given a four-month suspended jail term for attacking his City team-mate, Ousmane Dabo, in training.

Football: Villarreal fire Luis Garcia after 50 days and reappoint Calleja

MADRID (AFP) - Struggling Villarreal on Tuesday (Jan 29) fired coach Luis Garcia after just 50 days in charge and turned to Javi Calleja, the man they axed in December.
"The decision I have made is to rehire the coach we had at the beginning, called Javier Calleja, who will take over the squad from tomorrow for the rest of the season," Villarreal president Fernando Roig told a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Under Calleja, the club finished fifth last season and reached the knockout rounds of the Europa League. He was sacked with Villarreal 17th in La Liga with just three victories in their first 15 league matches this season.
Luis Garcia took over on Dec 10 and won his first match three days later as Villarreal beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 at home to clinch first place in their Europa League group. But he followed that with a run of eight matches without a victory.
The Yellow Submarine have sunk to second-bottom of La Liga, drawing four and losing two of their league games under Luis Garcia. They were also eliminated by Espanyol over two legs in the Copa del Rey.
Villarreal needed "a person with knowledge of the staff and knowledge of the current situation of the club", Roig said.
He said that Calleja would give the club "the possibility of first-division football next season", adding that the returning coach must save the club without the benefit of any new signings in the January transfer window.
"It is going to be very difficult," Roig said.
Villarreal host Espanyol on Sunday and face Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League last-32 first leg on Feb 14.

Emery wants team to seal the deal in Italy
LONDON • If only Arsenal could unlock the bewildering and elusive secret to away games.
Having given themselves an encouraging leg-up with a 2-0 Europa League victory at the Emirates on Thursday, thanks to Aaron Ramsey's effort and a Kalidou Koulibaly own goal, attention now switches to a daunting trip to Napoli next week to see their enthralling quarter-final through.
Their wretched form on the road this season, with Arsenal the only Premier League team yet to keep a clean sheet on their travels, means the tie is far from a done deal.
The Italian Serie A side are a formidable force in front of their vociferous fans at the San Paolo Stadium.
Warning that it is going to be "very difficult there", Unai Emery admitted his squad's character will be tested as "sometimes away, we lose the spirit we have at home".
The Arsenal manager added: "The first leg was very important to take a good result.

Consecutive wins Arsenal have racked up at the Emirates.

"We deserved to win, but their performances at home are usually very strong. We will plan to win the match, but we need to have a lot of respect for them. It is still 50-50. Our challenge is to be competitive."
Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti talked up his side's chances, confident that it will be a "different environment" with the home crowd.
He added: "The result is difficult to change, but we have 90 minutes left."
At Slavia Prague, Chelsea's 1-0 win, courtesy of Marcos Alonso's late header, was overshadowed by a pre-match incident which saw three fans banned from the game in the Czech Republic.
The club's security team had identified the fans from a video posted on Twitter of them singing a derogatory song about Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and calling him a bomber. Condemning the trio for their "abhorrent discriminatory behaviour", the Blues promised to "take the strongest possible action against them".
Manager Maurizio Sarri backed the "very strong and right decision" while the Reds also thanked Chelsea for their quick response.
In the other quarter-finals, Valencia triumphed 3-1 at Villarreal in a Spanish LaLiga battle while Portugal's Benfica ran out 4-2 winners over 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany.

That beat a European record of 48,000 set in February when Athletic Bilbao hosted Atletico at San Mames, one of the venues for the mens Euro 2020 tournament.
Just short of 40,000 fans also set an Italian record for Juventus' 1-0 win over Fiorentina in March, attendances bolstered by free or cheap tickets.
Neville believes there is even more support for the women's game in England on a consistent basis and called on the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea to follow suit to build momentum ahead of the women's World Cup in France this summer.
"Looking at the attendances in our league yesterday (Sunday), I actually think that is better than the attendances for a one-off game in Spain, Portugal or Italy," said Neville ahead of World Cup warm-up friendlies against Canada and Spain.
"What I would say is some of the teams in England, the big teams in England, have got to open their big stadiums and fill it.
"Let's blow the rest of Europe away because I think our game in this country is in a far better place than in Spain, Italy or Portugal."
Neville's former club Manchester United look set to be promoted to the English Women's Super League (WSL) in their first season since the formation of their female team, Arsenal lead Manchester City in a tight WSL title race, while Chelsea face European champions Lyon in the semi-final of the Champions League later this month.
"Now we've got to say Man Utd if they win the league, or Arsenal throw open your stadium. A Champions League game at Chelsea, why not play it at Stamford Bridge?
"Get 30 or 40,000 in. Our players, the WSL is at the level now where clubs have got to open their stadiums.
"Let's fill it and blow away the rest of Europe. That's my feelings having watched (Athletic) Bilbao, Juventus. They've done it but let us do it two or three times between now and the rest of the season."
Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final victory over Paris Saint-Germain was overshadowed by crowd trouble as police seized weapons and drugs from travelling French fans before the first leg in London.
However, Neville insisted that game showed that women's football can now generate the passionate atmosphere associated with men's games at the highest level.
"I don't want any of that rubbish, but it is a sign people are not just turning up for a women's game to sample the chips and bring the kids, they are coming because they want their team to win badly."

Chelsea collapsed to a 4-0 thrashing at Bournemouth as the Premier League's supposed lesser lights continued to cause mischief at the top end of the table. Liverpool, seeking a first title since 1990, have still increased the gap over City from four points to five but it was night of jitters at a freezing Anfield.
