Football: Barcelona is greater than the sum of its parts, says Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

LONDON • Lionel Messi has scored 22 Champions League goals in 30 appearances against English teams - more than any other player in the history of the competition.
But Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no plans to man-mark the Barcelona talisman in the first leg of their quarter-final tie today, despite admitting he "will go down in history as one of the best ever".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he said: "Messi will be difficult to stop but never impossible, it's not like Messi against Manchester United, (there's also Luis) Suarez, (Philippe) Coutinho, (Arturo) Vidal, so many good players. We can't focus on one, we have to focus on (all) 11 of them.
"What kind of plan can you have to stop one of the best in the world? This season we (have already) played against (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Kylian) Mbappe, and now Messi. They're challenges I relish, I say bring it on."
Although this is the first time Solskjaer will face the 31-year-old and his team as a coach, there is someone who has a wealth of experience trying to shackle the Argentina captain and whose experience he has drawn upon - his mentor Alex Ferguson.
Revealing he had tapped the former United managerial great's inside knowledge, he said: "Of course, I've spoken with the gaffer since the draw was made but no details... You look at what you'll do against them and we're ready."
While Solskjaer is fully aware "we have to defend well against them", he also urged the Old Trafford faithful to come out in droves as "we will need the crowd in a game like this".

  • Barcelona v Man United: Epic Champions League battles

  • 2011: FINAL, WEMBLEY
This was the last time the two European football juggernauts met in a competitive fixture.
It was, however, far from a tight contest as United were overrun in midfield while Lionel Messi led their defence on a merry run as Barcelona ran out 3-1 winners.
This was tiki-taka football at its peak, with Pep Guardiola lifting his second European Cup as a manager.

    2009: FINAL, STADIO OLIMPICO
While United were ultimately outplayed in the 2-0 loss, they departed Rome asking life's cruellest question - what if?
Despite a blistering start, during which they were on top, they failed to score before their defence gave away a soft opener to Samuel Eto'o.
The Red Devils could only rue Darren Fletcher's ban that left Michael Carrick isolated in midfield against Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, with the former eventually supplying Messi's headed goal.

    2008: SEMI-FINAL 2ND LEG, OLD TRAFFORD
Former United manager Alex Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz were so determined to restrict the away side's "passing carousel" that they went through an unprecedented level of tactical preparation in training.
The attention to detail worked as they restricted Barcelona to few chances and no goals across the two legs, reaching their first Champions League final since 1999 thanks to Paul Scholes' howitzer on a night of raw emotion.
It was probably, across both legs, their most negative performance in Ferguson's 26 years at the club, but the end justified the means, with United going on to claim their third European Cup.

The Norwegian said: "Hopefully, a bit of rain will make for a special evening. Confidence is high. The result, what we did against Paris Saint-Germain, and how we have climbed the table, clawing back points.
"The players have given themselves and the supporters great belief. I can feel the tension, the excitement. The Champions League is possible and we can go on to win it. There will have to be luck and margins, we must perform at the best."
But even if the Red Devils fail to match the Catalan giants' "quality" at home, the tie - their first meeting since the 2011 Champions League final - is "not going to be decided until we play 90 minutes in the Nou Camp".
Backing midfielder Paul Pogba to "perform tomorrow as his job is to be the creator and to drive us forward", Solskjaer added: "We know we can't give fouls away, look how many goals Messi has scored from free kicks outside the area (seven this season), we have to be careful.
"(But) the Champions League throws up so many strange results, we just have to make sure we perform to our best and have a result to take over to Barcelona."
The 46-year-old also touched on Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's first return to his "second home" of Manchester since leaving the club in 2008, before jokingly drawing a parallel with their age gap.
He said: "Gerard, I used to play with him. He came as a young boy (Pique is now 32), we had a lot of belief in him.
"He was maybe unlucky, he came here when (Nemanja) Vidic and Rio (Ferdinand) played here so he didn't get the chances he probably deserved.
"It will be nice to meet him again. Hopefully, we can make him feel old, and not me young."
United also received a boost after it was revealed forward Marcus Rashford would likely be fit, although midfielder Nemanja Matic remains a doubt.

Gotze predicts success for diligent Dortmund
MONACO • Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze is confident that his German side can go far in the Champions League after they qualified for the last 16 as Group A winners with a 2-0 win over Thierry Henry's Monaco on Tuesday.
Portugal midfielder Raphael Guerreiro scored twice to claim all three points for the visitors as they snatched top spot from Atletico Madrid - who could only draw 0-0 at Club Brugge - with a superior head-to-head record.
"With all the possession we had, you'd have to say we deserved the win in the end," Gotze said on the club's official website.
"Winning the group makes it that bit sweeter. We were saying before the match that we felt Atletico might draw 0-0. Fortunately, this turned out to be the case.
"The situation is really positive. As long as we work hard as a team, both in defence and in attack, we're going to have a lot of success."
Meanwhile, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo stole the limelight before their match when he appeared to let slip a sexist remark, telling a female reporter he did not wish to discuss money with a woman.
Cristina Garcia Tirado of Spanish television station Cuatro had asked if the club had enough money to offer a new contract to veteran defender Diego Godin.
"To be sincere, I don't like to speak about money because it is uncouth, and even less so with a woman," Cerezo said in response to her question.
Garcia herself played down the comment, saying Cerezo was "a great person and a gentleman" and had always been respectful to her and other women.
"It was an unfortunate moment from the president but, normally, he is very respectful towards me. I think it was a lapse and he didn't think about his answer. He has always treated me kindly," she said.
"It's true that sometimes he says things and makes jokes without thinking about the consequences, but he does not want to cause any harm."
Last week, French DJ Martin Solveig was widely criticised for asking Lyon forward Ada Hegerberg, when she came on stage to receive the inaugural Ballon d'Or award for the best player in women's football, whether she could "twerk".
In Istanbul, Group D winners Porto struggled to a 3-2 away victory over Galatasaray but, despite the loss, the Turkish side finished third and secured a spot in the Europa League's round of 32.
Lokomotiv Moscow had needed a win against already-qualified Schalke to have any hope of snatching third place away from Galatasaray, but they fell to a stoppage-time goal from Alessandro Schoepf and finished bottom after the 1-0 defeat.

Jurgen Klopp lauds Reds' middle men

Jurgen Klopp lauds Reds' middle men

LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed the performance of Jordan Henderson in Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Porto, with the midfielder delivering another impressive display in a more advanced role.
The Reds captain recently said he had been badgering Klopp to allow him more freedom to break into the final third and, after scoring as a second-half substitute at Southampton last Friday, he started and delivered a killer pass that led to Roberto Firmino's second goal.
"Hendo is a brilliant player. He obviously likes the position. We've not used him there for 3.5 years - sorry about that!" grinned Klopp. "I'm glad he can show it."
Henderson has often played in a defensive midfield role for Klopp but, with Brazilian Fabinho taking up that responsibility, he is now able to push into advanced areas.
The Englishman supported the front trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Firmino with his harrying and pressing to maintain pressure on the Porto defence. Yet his defence-splitting pass to the overlapping Trent Alexander-Arnold showed that he is more than a workhorse.
Klopp was also pleased with the "really, really good" Naby Keita, who opened the scoring after just five minutes, saying the midfielder delivered his most complete display since his close-season move from RB Leipzig.
The Guinean excelled in the first half, during which Porto opened themselves up to be attacked despite setting up in an unorthodox 5-2-3 designed to deny the hosts space.
But Liverpool were also leaving gaps to exploit at the other end, with little evidence of the defensive solidity they have shown this season.
With the away-goals rule, by which the Portuguese side beat Roma in the previous round, the Reds will be grateful they are 2-0 up rather than 3-1 or 4-2 ahead, which might have reflected a slightly chaotic match more accurately.
And they had a VAR scare, when the ball struck Alexander-Arnold's arm, and could have easily lost top scorer Salah in the closing stages for a dangerous lunge on Danilo Pereira - all of which led Klopp to warn his side of an "intense" return leg.
He said: "We scored two goals and controlled the ball most of the time. We lost a little bit of direction in the second half, but there's nothing to criticise. 2-0 is a very, very good result.
"We cannot decide the tie tonight, so now we have to go there and fight again."

Sarri tips Callum to be future Blues star
LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has said that Callum Hudson-Odoi is ready to start an English Premier League match for Chelsea and it will not be long before he becomes a regular starter, but has defended his cautious use of the youngster thus far.
The winger, 18, made his England debut in last week's Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic, and started the next match against Montenegro. But he has played only 119 minutes in the Premier League this season across six substitute appearances.
However, before Chelsea's league clash against Cardiff today, their Italian manager Sarri maintained it is coincidence that Hudson-Odoi's seven starts this season have all come in the Europa League, FA Cup or League Cup.
He has made 19 appearances in all competitions, including the Community Shield.
"I'm really very confident in him," Sarri said. "He has started a lot of matches - not in the Premier League but that's by chance. It's not a problem for me to put him in the starting XI in a Premier League match. He's ready.
"But, of course, I can only play with two wingers. In the squad, we have (Eden) Hazard, Willian, Pedro, so it's really not very easy to start every match.
"Probably in the near future, he will start in 75 to 80 per cent of the matches.
"In this season, he is really very young... He needs to improve more - he has to work every day, and improve the left foot, improve in the defensive phase, improve in the movement without the ball.
"So I think the evolution is the right evolution. Probably, he will play 30 to 35 matches next season."
Hudson-Odoi, whose contract expires in June next year, has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich. The German champions have tabled a bid of £35 million (S$61.8 million) for him, with the player himself said to be open to the transfer.
But Sarri insisted he believes that Hudson-Odoi will remain at Stamford Bridge this summer.
"I think so," he said. "I'm not able to say if he will sign a new contract, but I think he will remain here with us in every case."

Football: Emotional Ribery set for Bayern return after playing career

BERLIN (AFP) - Franck Ribery said Tuesday (May 7) he hopes to return to Bayern Munich once his playing career is over, as he prepares to end 12 years at the club.
Ribery, 36, confirmed last weekend that he would not extend his Bayern contract beyond this summer, ending a record-breaking playing career at the Bundesliga giants.
At an emotional press conference in Munich on Tuesday, the Frenchman said he hoped to continue playing for another one or two years before returning to Munich after retirement.
"I still don't know what I will do next season, there are a few options," he said.
"I will play for one or two more years and then I am 100 per cent sure I will come back to Munich."
Asked whether he would take up a specific role at Bayern, Ribery said that it was something he had discussed with the club hierarchy.
"We talked for a long time about it," he said. "We will have to wait, but the important thing is I am always at home here."
In December, Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said he could imagine Ribery taking up a role after his career.
"Franck is someone who has shaped an era here, so I would be happy to see him stay in the club (after retirement)," he said.
Ribery said that it would be difficult for him to leave Bayern after 12 years of service.
"It is not easy, I have experienced and won so much with Bayern," he said.
The veteran winger, who has been linked with clubs in Australia and Qatar, said he was undecided as to where he would go next.
"I have to go where I can bring my family. I can't leave them alone because we are a group and there are a lot of us."
Ribery, who has won 22 titles with Bayern and could claim a record ninth Bundesliga title this season, is expected to be given a roaring send-off when Bayern face Eintracht Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena on the last day of the season.
"I always had an unbelievable relationship with the fans and they always stood by me, even in the difficult times."
Ribery, whose fellow Bayern stalwart Arjen Robben will also leave at the end of this season, said that the highlight of his Bayern career was winning the Champions League in 2013.
"What we did in 2013 was crazy, a dream," he said.
He also ranked treble-winning boss Jupp Heynckes above Pep Guardiola as the most important coach of his Bayern career.
"There were lots of good coaches, but Jupp was a very important person for my life and my career," he said.

Anfield is 'worst stadium' to visit for Bayern star Robben

MUNICH • When their Champions League last-16 fixture was announced in December, Arjen Robben called it "the worst possible draw" for Bayern Munich.
He was at Liverpool's Anfield when, in the 2004-05 and 2006-07 seasons, Chelsea fell maddeningly short in the semi-finals.
The first was decided by Luis Garcia's "ghost goal", and Robben prefers to leave it at "we'll never know" when asked if it went in.
The second was settled on penalties, one of which he sent too close to Pepe Reina, and proved to be his penultimate match for the club.
He remembers that as an "emotional game" and, both times, Chelsea were repelled by a formidable defensive blockade.
"At that time, they were really capable of being this cup-fighter team, also in the FA Cup," he said.
"In one or two games, they could really live up to it and perform. Just not the whole season, which was maybe too much. That was their biggest quality, they were there at the moment they needed to be there.

NO FOND MEMORIES
If you ask me what's the worst stadium for me, it's probably Liverpool. You always have your favourite opponent and there always has to be a negative one.
ARJEN ROBBEN, Bayern Munich winger, who has lost at Anfield with Chelsea and Real Madrid.

"Now it's changed and they (have) developed really well. The manager (Jurgen Klopp) has done a great job.
"Last year, they were in the Champions League final and, at the moment, they are top (of the Premier League). It's a long, long time ago that they won the league and that's the one they're dreaming of."
Recalling how he also suffered heartbreak as part of a Real Madrid side that were thrashed 4-0 by the Reds in 2009, he sounded a warning about Anfield to his teammates.
"If you ask me what's the worst stadium for me, it's probably Liverpool," the former Netherlands forward admitted. "You always have your favourite opponent and there always has to be a negative one."
The 35-year-old also believes the "atmosphere is probably one of the best you can imagine in Europe".
Naming Liverpool as among the favourites to win this term's Champions League, he added: "It's (the crowd) always like a big boost to them. But we're used to playing in big stadiums, so we just have to focus on ourselves.
"We know their qualities. In these top games there are not a lot of secrets. It's about the little details."
While Robben will play no part in tomorrow's first leg, having been out since November with a thigh injury, he feels Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk's one-game suspension will be a weak point the German champions have to exploit.
He said of his former national colleague: "He is a key player at a gigantic club, and he is the captain of the Netherlands team. He deserves all the compliments."

Football: Suspended Thierry Henry set to lose Monaco job

PARIS (REUTERS) - Thierry Henry was suspended by Monaco on Thursday (Jan 24) and looked set to lose his job as coach after only three months in charge at the Ligue 1 club, with former manager Leonardo Jardim expected to take control from Friday.
"Monaco have decided to suspend Thierry Henry... until a final decision (on his future) is made," the principality club said in a statement.
Jardim, who was sacked himself last October and replaced by Henry, was expected to be unveiled as the manager on Friday after agreeing terms on a two-and-half-year contract late on Thursday, L'Equipe reported.
Portuguese coach Jardim led Monaco to the Ligue 1 title in 2017, the same year they reached the Champions League semi-finals, before being sacked after a poor start to the current season.
Monaco, who appointed the former Arsenal and France striker to replace Jardim in October, have picked up only two points in their last five Ligue 1 encounters and sit second from bottom in the table.
The principality side were also knocked out of the French Cup in the last 32 by Ligue 2 side Metz on Tuesday.
This followed a 5-1 demolition at home by Racing Strasbourg in their last league outing with the club showing no signs of improvement since signing midfielder Cesc Fabregas from Chelsea earlier this month.
During that game, Henry made an abusive remark to a Strasbourg player and later apologised.
The club said Franck Passi, Henry's assistant coach since December, would be in charge of the team's training on Friday.
Passi has previously had caretaker roles at Lille and Olympique de Marseille.
Henry, who started out playing for Monaco and went on to enjoy a stellar club career with Arsenal and Barcelona, worked as assistant coach for Belgium for two years until 2018 but had never been in charge of a team in his own right.
Henry, 41, played for Monaco for five seasons, winning a league title with them in 1997.
Henry said earlier on Thursday that he would downsize his squad ahead of a crucial game at fellow strugglers Dijon in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
"We need guys who want to save the club, who don't think about themselves. We're going to war," he told reporters.
"But despite the results we are still alive," he added, refusing to speculate on his future at the club.
Monaco are three points from the safety zone with 15 points from 21 games. Under Henry, they have won only four out of 20 competitive games.
Their only chance of a trophy this season is in the League Cup, where they will face En Avant Guingamp in the semi-finals next week.
