Football: Klopp denies Liverpool's lighter schedule is title advantage

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp denied on Friday (Jan 11) that his Premier League leaders will have the upper hand over Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the title race despite a lighter schedule after crashing out of both domestic cup competitions.
City trail Klopp's men by four points, with Tottenham two points further back, but both of Liverpool's rivals are still involved in four competitions.
Klopp meanwhile made nine changes for Monday's 2-1 defeat at Wolves in the FA Cup, with his focus on ending the Reds' 29-year wait to win the title, and his team were knocked out of the League Cup by Chelsea back in September.
"There's no advantage. If you have all your players available, it's brilliant that you can always play them, it's really good," said Klopp ahead of Saturday's trip to Brighton.
"We have to use the time. You can do a lot of wrong things when you have a week to train, that's possible.
"We have to use the time and really be, week in and week out, in the best shape we can be."
Dejan Lovren was one of only two players Klopp retained against Wolves from a 2-1 defeat to City in their last Premier League outing, but the Croatian picked up a hamstring injury after just six minutes at Molineux.
Klopp now has a defensive crisis on his hands. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have also been sidelined in recent weeks, but Matip may be fit in time to return against Brighton.
"It's quite special if you would bet on having three centre-halves injured in the same moment - you could win a lot of money for that because usually it doesn't happen.
"Here it happened, it was a bit of bad luck. That makes it quite a bit tricky."

LIVERPOOL INJURIES

Klopp reiterated his belief that Lovren's injury is a justification for why he was right to rest players such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino against Wolves after a hectic fixture list over the festive season.
"We had to make changes for the Wolves game. The players we didn't line up in that game were either a little bit injured, or injured, or played all the games in December, plus the City game at the beginning of January.
"Bringing them again in that moment, as you saw with Dejan, who played pretty much all these games as well, is a risk - it's a proper risk."
Defeat at City on Jan 3 was Liverpool's first in the league this season and Firmino stressed the importance of bouncing back immediately at Brighton to not give champions City another chance to cut the gap when they host Wolves on Monday.
"That's what the Premier League is all about - it's intensely competitive. If the team at the top stutters, the second place will overtake them," the Brazilian told Liverpool's website.
"We know we can't go to sleep and lose silly points. We must maintain our focus until the end of the season."

Maurizio Sarri puzzled by Chelsea collapse, says sorry to fans

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has admitted that he may not be equipped to motivate his players after Chelsea were trounced 4-0 at Bournemouth, their heaviest Premier League defeat since 1996.
The Italian, who endured chants of "You don't know what you're doing" from the livid away fans, kept his team in the dressing room for around an hour after the final whistle on Wednesday night in an effort to understand why a game that had been goalless at half-time had unravelled so spectacularly.
The defeat led to Chelsea dropping out of the top four on goal difference and places his position under scrutiny six months into a three-year contract.
Speaking after the post-match inquest, during which he asked the rest of his coaching staff to leave, Sarri said: "In that moment I wanted to talk to them alone, without anybody. I needed to understand, it was so different in the first and second half.
"In the first half, we could never see that the second half would be a disaster. We stopped playing. We didn't play like a team. It's difficult to understand why.
"The players are good enough. Maybe we are not at the top of the Premier League, but we are competitive. We can lose, of course, in every match, but not in this way."
Asked if he was good enough to steer the Blues to success, he added: "Maybe it's my fault, maybe I'm not able to motivate them. But the team are very strong, they are also able to win without the coach."
He had been critical of his players after the recent 2-0 defeat by Arsenal in the hope of coaxing a positive reaction but, despite encouraging Cup wins against Tottenham and Sheffield Wednesday, this was a second successive loss in the league and the fifth in their past 12 games.
However, the 60-year-old claimed he did not feel his job was "under pressure" before apologising to the travelling supporters after Joshua King scored a brace either side of David Brooks' strike before Charlie Daniels completed the rout in stoppage time.
He said: "I didn't see the signal of my work. So I am frustrated. I have to try again tomorrow because I need to solve this problem. We have only to say sorry to our fans."

But while Sarri publicly questioned his team's resolve, Mauricio Pochettino, on the other hand, revelled in the "massive commitment" shown by Son Heung-min.
The forward, who returned to Spurs after South Korea exited the Asian Cup, was a bundle of energy at Wembley, cancelling out Craig Cathcart's opener before Fernando Llorente's winner in the 2-1 win.
Such was Son's dedication to their cause that the Spurs manager had no choice but to keep the player on the field for 90 minutes even though "it was not the plan".
He said: "I'm so happy with his performance. He deserves a lot of praise. I have to be honest, I'm happy that he's back because he's helping us to try to win."

Home United breathed life into their AFC Cup campaign after beating Lao Toyota 1-0 yesterday, but concerns linger over their ability to score.
The win, courtesy of a header from defender Abdil Qaiyyim before 1,227 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, saw the Protectors create enough chances to put the Group H fixture to bed long before they had to settle for a solitary strike.
Without injured attackers Shahril Ishak (ankle) and Song Ui-young (groin) and wide midfielder Hafiz Nor playing as a makeshift striker, Home's bluntness up front could yet return to haunt them later in the competition.
"With the chances we had, another goal would make this game safe for the team if we had a clinical finisher tonight," rued Protectors' coach Saswadimata Dasuki. "The main thing now is to go to Laos (on April 17) and get the three points. After that, we will go on against Kaya (Iloilo) and (PSM) Makassar.
Home had earlier drawn 1-1 with Indonesia Liga 1 runners-up Makassar and lost 5-0 to Philippine National League runners-up Kaya. The win moved the Singapore Premier League runners-up to third in Group H on four points, one behind leaders Kaya and Makassar.
Against Lao Toyota, Hafiz, Adam Swandi, Izzdin Shafiq and Aqhari Abdullah all had shooting opportunities, but were unable go beat goalkeeper Outthilath Nammakhoth.
The game also became a duel between Hami Syahin and the Laotian goalkeeper as the midfielder resorted to taking shots from distance, but to no avail.
Home finally found the net in first-half stoppage time when left-back Ho Wai Loon floated a free kick to the far post for centre-back Abdil to head home emphatically.
Saswa said: "The most important thing is to get the three points. It was very risky at 1-0. They kept coming at us till the last minute."
After seeing his players battle the full 90 minutes, Lao Toyota coach Jun Fukuda was disappointed, saying: "We came for three points but we couldn't score."
Elsewhere, Tampines Rovers thrashed Cambodian champions Nagaworld FC 5-1 in Phnom Penh to lead Group F with seven points from three games.

Liverpool 4
Burnley 2
LONDON • It would be too simplistic to say Liverpool responded to the test of nerve set by Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp's team have been doing that since the first day of this enthralling Premier League season.
This was a test of nerve set by Burnley, the match officials and the elements, and they delivered on all counts to return the gap in the title race to one point yesterday.
Liverpool fell behind to a controversial early goal, but ultimately ran out comfortable 4-2 victors, thanks to a brace apiece from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
They were also indebted to consistently poor defending from Sean Dyche's team, who remain too close to the relegation zone for their own liking despite causing the title contenders problems all afternoon at a wet and windy Anfield.
The challenge for Klopp's men began before Anfield had properly roused itself for the kick-off.
Ashley Westwood swung a corner into a packed penalty box and directly into Liverpool's net.

KEEPING PACE WITH CITY
At 3-1 up, all the balls Burnley got were from us. I'm completely happy with the performance, especially against Burnley. Nobody gets rid of us.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on his team's come-from-behind victory after Burnley's controversial opening goal.

The small pocket of Burnley supporters erupted and so did Alisson, who was unable to leap, having been sandwiched between Jack Cork and James Tarkowski. The Reds waited for referee Andre Marriner to penalise a clear foul, but he instead sent the Brazil goalkeeper into the notebook for dissent.
It was a bad call against Klopp's team although it gave them 84 minutes to channel their grievance in the most appropriate way.
Burnley helped them along the way with several defensive lapses that squandered the major decision in their favour, with Tom Heaton the chief culprit on an afternoon to forget for the England goalkeeper.
The hosts levelled when he failed to intercept Mohamed Salah's low cross and Firmino gratefully converted the gift at close range for his 10th league goal of the campaign.
Klopp's men benefited from another error to edge ahead, with Jeff Hendrick the culprit this time.
He played Phil Bardsley into trouble and Adam Lallana blocked the full-back's clearance, diverting it to Salah inside the box. The ball then broke for Mane, who curled a fine finish to overturn Burnley's controversial advantage.
Lallana's inclusion ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita was met with scepticism before the start of the game, but he provided the creativity that Liverpool's midfield has lacked in recent away fixtures.
It was his ball to Salah, who failed to score for the fifth consecutive game, that enabled the latter to subsequently cross for Firmino's equaliser and his challenge on Bardsley was also a key moment.
The cushion of a third goal came in the second half courtesy of another mistake from Heaton after his weak kick found Salah, who raced through on goal only to be halted by Charlie Taylor's precise tackle.
The left-back, however, could only steer the ball to Firmino, who prodded home his second.
It could have been a nervous finale when substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson netted, but the Clarets' hopes of a dramatic recovery were dashed when substitute Daniel Sturridge released Mane to stroke home in added time.
Klopp felt his surprise decision to name Lallana in his line-up was vindicated as he "played a really good game" before insisting that Burnley's opener should not have stood.
The German said: "The first goal in a lot of countries would have been disallowed.
"That never helps, but it was early so that's good. We kept as calm as possible, we forced the goals with two brilliant moments of football and defended with passion.
"When it was 3-1, we did not finish it off and it was not cool. But then, we score a fourth and it's all good."

Football: Atletico close gap on Barca with win over Celta

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid reduced the gap behind runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona to nine points by seeing off Celta Vigo 2-0 on Saturday (April 13) with goals from strikers Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata either side of halftime.
Barca beat Atletico in last week's top-of-the-table clash to close in on another La Liga title but the Catalans offered the merest chink of light to their pursuers when a largely second-string side drew 0-0 at bottom club Huesca earlier on Saturday.
Celta, hovering above the relegation zone and without top scorer and talisman Iago Aspas, also made things difficult for Diego Simeone's Atletico and forced goalkeeper Jan Oblak to make three impressive saves in the first half.
Atletico took the lead against the run of play in the 42nd minute thanks to an unstoppable free kick from Griezmann, who smashed the ball into the top corner past Celta keeper Ruben Blanco.
The France forward turned provider in the second half, playing an incisive pass up to strike partner Morata, who coolly rounded Blanco before hammering into an empty net in the 74th minute.
Barca lead the standings on 74 points while Atletico have 65 with six games remaining.

Football: Solskjaer promises no complacency as permanent Man United boss

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised there will be no complacency from him or the players now he has been confirmed as the Premier League club's permanent manager.
Solskjaer was handed the job on Thursday (March 28) after a successful three months as caretaker boss, but he said there would no easing off now he has a three-year contract - setting the Premier League title as his goal.
"Players who get complacent, they never last at this club anyway," Solskjaer told a news conference.
"I am the same, I can't be complacent and now rest on (the fact that) I have the job, It's not me. We are looking forward, we have got to work harder," he added.
In keeping with that approach, Solskjaer side-stepped a question about his pride at his appointment.
"Now the hard work starts, the enjoyable work but hard work, it is not a moment to be proud in that respect," he said.
"I have got some targets, I want a Manchester United team that is one of the hardest-working teams in the league, one of the fittest teams in the league and that then will bring results. I think the players know my expectations on the future," he added.

The 46-year-old Norwegian has guided United to 14 wins in 19 matches in all competitions as caretaker boss since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
His short-term target is to secure a top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League but Solskjaer said that winning the Premier League was his goal.
"To lift the Premier League trophy again is what we expect, what we're used to, what we have done so many times," he said.
"We can't wait too many years but it's not going to happen overnight."
In the longer term, he said he wanted to continue the positive mood around the club.
"The day I walk out of the doors, I hope it is with a smile on my face and have given the supporters, the staff, the players, the club, a good time and that is all I can do, all I can promise, all I've promised to the owners, to (CEO) Ed (Woodward), everyone," he said.
"I will always be myself, I am not going to change, I will be an optimist and positive guy and we will do this together."
The Norwegian's back-room staff is expected to stay as it is with his assistant Mike Phelan, brought back to the club with Solskjaer in December, now in contract talks.
"Mick is a key part of the set-up and they are talking to each other," said Solskjaer.
"The set-up we have now I really hope is going to continue."
