Football: Emotional Diego Godin to leave Atletico Madrid after nine-year stay

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin is leaving the club after nine years when his contract expires in June, the Uruguayan defender said at a news conference on Tuesday (May 7), fighting to hold back tears.
Godin, 33, has played 387 times for Atletico since joining from Villarreal in 2010, scoring 27 goals - including famously clinching the club's first LaLiga title in 18 years with a header in a 1-1 draw at Barcelona in 2014.
Godin did not say where he is going, but numerous Spanish media have reported that he is on his way to Italian Serie A club Inter Milan.
"I'm a little nervous, much more than I am before a game, but I have called everyone here to inform you that these are my final days at the club," Godin said.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo added: "We are here to say goodbye to an Atletico legend. You have been a vital part of this great era for the club, with your efforts and your goals, like the one which gave us the title at the Nou Camp.
"You have fought in a thousand battles and defended the club's shirt in every game and you have worn the captain's armband.
"Wherever you end up, Atletico wishes you a lot of luck. Atletico is your family, the Wanda Metropolitano is your home."

In addition to the LaLiga triumph, Godin won two Europa League titles, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup and three Uefa Super Cups with Atletico as well as reaching the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, only to lose both times to Real.
Godin's departure will leave another hole in Atletico's defence, with France international Lucas Hernandez already agreeing to join Bayern Munich in June after they paid his €80 million (S$ 122 million) release clause.

Football: Do teams still need iconic captains now?

Football: Do teams still need iconic captains now?

LONDON • About a decade ago, The Wall Street Journal writer Sam Walker had the idea of trying to identify the most objectively great teams in sporting history, and seeing if he could discern any common traits.
He found they all shared a single characteristic - for every team, the duration of their success coincided with the lifespan of a captain, who could elevate a team to perform beyond the level of their natural ability, from Hungary's Ferenc Puskas to Carles Puyol of Barcelona.
In short, he theorised the one thing the greatest teams have in common is great player leadership.
Walker's findings provide an interesting counterpoint to an inconspicuous but intriguing trend of this Premier League season.
At many teams, the club captain has been an impermanent or peripheral figure.
Gary Cahill has barely played for Chelsea, likewise, Everton's Phil Jagielka, and Southampton's Steven Davis, now on loan to Rangers.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE
You don't always need vocal captains... You can lead by example as a creative player. If the likes of Hazard or Silva are picked as captains, for me, that's a sign that those guys should be able to inspire the team.
NIGEL WINTERBURN, former Arsenal defender, on how individualistic attacking players can break the archetype of the vocal and defensive captain.

Manchester United's Antonio Valencia and Manchester City's Vincent Kompany have started five and six league games respectively.
Seven clubs (Arsenal, the Toffees, Fulham, City, United, Newcastle and the Saints) have had four or more captains this term.
All of which begs a question: Is the ever-present, totemic captain an endangered species? And does it matter?
The first thing to point out is that there does not appear to be an obvious correlation between consistency of captain and success based on the small sample of this league season.
City do not appear to have suffered for rotating the armband.
In fact, it is easy to disparage the importance attached to captaincy as old-fashioned - a peculiarly English hang-up.

When pundits - usually from the generations of retired former players - bemoan the lack of leaders in modern football, it feels like they are often harking back to that monolithic figure of English folklore.
The blood-soaked Terry Butcher, or Captain Marvel Bryan Robson, or John Terry or Tony Adams shouting and pointing fingers.
But Nigel Winterburn, who played under Adams at Arsenal, says that the presence of an old-school skipper in the ranks was not something he or his teammates considered a particularly important factor in their success.
"It didn't give us anything extra," the former England defender says.
"I never really worried who was captain, it didn't interest me."
When Winterburn moved to West Ham, the captaincy was less consistent unlike at Highbury, yet he "didn't personally notice the difference".
Is the lionisation of a single captain out of step with the reality of modern football then, a prehistoric obsession in an era of advanced analytics and player rotation?
As Michael Cox pointed out in an article for ESPN on Arsenal's perceived lack of leaders in 2016, every generation thinks it had better leaders.
As early as 1938, then Gunners boss Herbert Chapman was lamenting: "Football today lacks the personalities of 20 or 30 years ago."
A lack of leadership is often a retrofitted criticism applied to underperforming teams, while teams that succeed, despite lacking archetypal leaders, escape censure.
However, it would be wrong to say the idea of captaincy is something that is incompatible with the analytical side of modern football.
It is possible that the cult of the captain has seemingly declined in parallel with the rise of the cult of the coach.
The advent of meticulous micromanagers such as City's Pep Guardiola and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, whose coaching depends in large part on intensively rehearsing movements and systems, ensures their teams are never unsure of what to do in any phase of the game.
It seems there has also been a change in the type of player considered for the captaincy.
In the past, that office was usually the preserve of vocal, charismatic, defensive players.
But a new breed of captain has begun to emerge. This season, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, David Silva at City and Fulham's Tom Cairney have worn the armband in the league.
These are all attacking players, most of the individualistic variety, none especially loud.
But Winterburn, who was captained by Joe Cole in his final season at West Ham, believes they can do the job.
"You don't always need vocal captains," he says. "You can lead by example as a creative player. If the likes of (Chelsea's Eden) Hazard or Silva are picked as captains, for me, that's a sign that those guys should be able to inspire the team."
While Winterburn still prefers the single-captain model, he adds, "There should be 11 captains out there."
It seems that is the way we are heading but by rotating the captaincy, are you multiplying leadership or spreading it more thinly?
Therein lies the paradox - with 59 players and counting having skippered a league team this season, is captaincy in decline? Or is it in fashion?

Football: Veteran Quagliarella helps rejuvenated Italy thrash Liechtenstein

PARMA, Italy (REUTERS) - Fabio Quagliarella became Italy's oldest goalscorer as his double helped Roberto Mancini's rejuvenated side thrash 10-man Liechtenstein 6-0 in their second Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday (March 26).
Quagliarella, 36, netted two first-half penalties, while 19-year-old Moise Kean scored his second goal in his third appearance. Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti and Leonardo Pavoletti also found the net.
Liechtenstein were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Daniel Kaufmann was sent off for a handball on his goalline.
Italy, who have a maximum six points in Group J after a 2-0 win against Finland on Saturday, controlled the midfield through Verratti while Quagliarella set an example with his aggression.
The Azzurri, who are rebuilding under Mancini after missing out on the 2018 World Cup, broke the deadlock after 17 minutes as the 23-year-old Sensi's header from Leonardo Spinazzola's cross from the left found the roof of the net.
Verratti doubled the tally with a fine curled shot into the far side of the goal on 32 minutes.
Quagliarella scored his first goal from the penalty spot after a Nicolas Hasler handball, and his second after Kaufmann also used his arm and was shown a straight red card.
Christian Panucci was Italy's previous oldest goalscorer at 35 years 62 days.
Kean, who had endured a frustrating first half, headed home the fifth on 70 minutes with second-half substitute Pavoletti adding the sixth on his international debut, tapping in after Benjamin Buechel had parried the 30-year-old's header into his path.
Italy next travel to Greece on June 8.

Football: Fifa says it's in regular contact with AFC over detained Bahraini player

DUBAI (REUTERS) - Fifa says it has been in regular contact with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) over the Bahraini footballer arrested in Thailand in November over a prison sentence in his homeland.
The Australian soccer players' union this week called on the AFC to intervene to help secure the release of Hakeem Al Araibi, who plays in Australia but was arrested in November in Bangkok on an Interpol notice issued at Bahrain's request.
Araibi, who played for Bahrain's national football team and was a critic of the government, had been convicted of vandalising a police station and sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia.
He denies wrongdoing. The Bahrain government says Araibi can appeal against the sentence if he returns to the kingdom. He was granted asylum in Australia in 2017 after fleeing Bahrain three years earlier.
Araibi was a vocal critic of AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa, a member of Bahrain's ruling family and cousin of the king, when he contested the global football governing body's presidential election in 2015.
Fifa has "been working behind the scenes and have been in regular contact with our national associations and with the AFC about this case", a spokesman said late on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Last week, it said Araibi should be freed and allowed to return to Australia to continue his career.

The AFC has said it was working with groups including Fifa, but declined to comment further.

Football: Sterling hits hat-trick as England thrash Czech Republic

LONDON (AFP) - Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as England started what they hope is a road back to Wembley for the Euro 2020 final with a comprehensive 5-0 win over the Czech Republic to open their qualifying campaign.
Harry Kane was also on target from the penalty spot as England carried the momentum from a run to the World Cup semi-finals and qualification for the last four of the Nations League into the Euro qualifiers.
England have stormed to the top of qualifying Group A ahead of Monday's trip to Montenegro, who drew 1-1 at Bulgaria.
Jadon Sancho is one of the new additions to Gareth Southgate's squad since that revival for the Three Lions in Russia and was handed his first competitive international start.
The 18-year-old, who has shone in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund this season, gave England fans further cause for excitement, with his potential added to that of Sterling and Kane coming into their prime.
Sterling had scored just two goals in his first 45 caps, but the Manchester City winger now has five in his last three England games as he begins to come of age on the international stage.

Comfortable England

After a lacklustre start in which the hosts dominated possession without threatening much, one move of genuine quality opened the scoring on 23 minutes and the way to a comfortable night for Southgate's men.

Kane showed his ability is not restricted to finding the net with a wonderful pass inside Filip Novak to free Sancho, who squared for Sterling to tap home on the stretch.
Another burst of inspiration from Sterling made the game safe in first-half stoppage time.
He wriggled around four Czech defenders before a combination of Pavel Kaderabek and Tomas Kalas hauled him down.
Kane maintained his flawless record from the spot for England and scored his 21st international goal, firing his powerful penalty past Jiri Pavlenka despite the Czech stopper getting a hand to it.
The Czechs already had bad memories of Wembley as the scene where they lost the Euro 96 final to Germany in extra-time before this mauling.
Gone are the days where they are contenders to win the Euros, but Jaroslav Silhavy's side did at least spark briefly into life after the break.
Tomas Soucek headed inches wide and David Pavelka forced Jordan Pickford into two routine saves before England went through the gears to give the scoreline a fairer reflection of the gulf between the sides.
Sancho should have scored his first international goal after more good work from Sterling and Kane, but could not force the ball past a desperate challenge from Novak, and Sterling showed Sancho how it is done with a fine curling finish into the top corner just after the hour mark.
However, England's hat-trick hero had luck on his side for his third goal as a huge deflection left Pavlenka in the Czech goal flummoxed.
That was Sterling's final act as he made way for another precociously talented 18-year-old, Callum Hudson-Odoi, to make his international debut, while Declan Rice was also handed his England debut after switching allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.
And Hudson-Odoi had a big part to play in England's fifth as his shot was parried by Pavlenka into the onrushing Kalas, who haplessly turned the ball into his own net.

Football: Unfair? Ajax boss Ten Hag disputes Pochettino claims

LONDON (REUTERS) - Sympathy was in short supply from Ajax Amsterdam manager Erik Ten Hag for injury-hit Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their Champions League semi-final first leg clash on Tuesday (April 30).
Hosts Tottenham are without a string of key players, including strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, for the game in north London and were also involved in a derby against West Ham United on Saturday while Ajax rested.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has said Ajax have an unfair advantage because the whole of the Dutch league programme was postponed to help Ten Hag's side prepare.
The straight-talking Dutchman was unimpressed, however, playing down suggestions his side were favourites.
"We get 10 million (euros) for playing in (Dutch first division) Eredivisire and they get many more millions for being in the Premier League. Is that not unfair on us?" the 49-year-old coach told reporters.
"There are always differing circumstances. Everybody has different circumstances. You just have to deal with them. That's what we do."
Midfielder Donny van der Beek, one of a crop of homegrown youngsters who have propelled four-times winners Ajax to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997, also made the point that their journey began last summer.

Ajax were actually playing in a second qualifying round tie against Austrians Sturm Graz in July, then beat Standard Liege to reach the playoffs where they overcame Dynamo Kiev.
That put them in a group containing Bayern Munich, but they emerged undefeated before beating Real Madrid in the last 16 and Juventus in the quarter-finals.
Now they are in sight of the final as well as being neck-and -neck with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch title race.
"It's all going quite fast," Van der Beek said, before a training session in Tottenham's new stadium which was open for the public to attend for the full duration.
"Spurs are a great team with great players and we will have to be at the same level or better than we were against Real and Juventus in the last two rounds."
Ajax might never have a better chance to reclaim the trophy before the so-called European heavyweights close in to pick off their best talent - as has happened in the case of midfielder Frenkie de Jong who will join Barcelona this summer.
But while it is young Dutch talent that has spearheaded Ajax's march, Ten Hag said it was a couple of former Premier League players who have provided the winning mentality.
Serbian Dusan Tadic joined from Southampton while Daley Blind has thrived since returning to the Netherlands after a spell with Manchester United.
"We had a good young team but a lack of experience," Ten Hag said. "It was a deliberate policy to sign players from the Premier League, with the knowledge and experience they bring."
Ajax are looking for their first win over Tottenham, having lost both legs of their European Cup Winners' Cup tie in 1981.

Football: Choupo-Moting in goal-line howler as PSG throw away chance to wrap up French title

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain squandered the chance to clinch the French Ligue 1 title in record-equalling time on Sunday (April 7) after a 2-2 draw at home to Strasbourg, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's incredible miss from on the goal line costing his team dear.
PSG were handed the opportunity to win their sixth French crown in seven seasons after second-placed Lille drew 1-1 at Reims earlier.
That left Thomas Tuchel's side knowing that three points at the Parc des Princes would see them retain the title and wrap it up with eight games to spare, matching the speed with which Laurent Blanc's team became champions in 2016.
Choupo-Moting gave them an early lead with his third Ligue 1 goal, but later in the first half he somehow succeeded in turning a net-bound Christopher Nkunku shot onto the post while standing on the line.
"I wondered if I was offside and it all happened very fast. I touched the ball, it hit the post and, well, it's a real shame because the ball was going in," he told Canal+. "Sorry about that."
Fresh from winning the League Cup last weekend, Strasbourg had equalised before Choupo-Moting's howler, when Nuno da Costa turned in a Lionel Carole cross, and they found themselves 2-1 up in the 38th minute when Anthony Goncalves lashed home from 22 yards.
Kylian Mbappe came off the bench on the hour mark but it was another PSG substitute who made it 2-2 with eight minutes remaining. Julian Draxler sent in a corner from the right and Germany defender Thilo Kehrer headed home.
However, having drawn at home to PSG back in December, mid-table Strasbourg then held on for a point.
Cameroon international Choupo-Moting started with Mbappe rested and Neymar, Angel di Maria and Edinson Cavani all unfit - the latter watched from the stands sporting a beret.

'Murphy's law'

"He is an excellent back-up player to have but if you start a lot for PSG you need to have confidence and he lacks that," said Tuchel of Choupo-Moting.
"He was very unfortunate because he started very well and then he stopped that ball on the line which would have made it 2-1 for us.
"I don't know why he did that. In English you say it's Murphy's law."
Still a huge 20 points clear at the summit and with a game in hand, PSG will now hope to secure the eighth league title in their history when they go to Lille next weekend.
A point will be enough in that game, but PSG should have finished the job here - Choupo-Moting's miss was one of the worst you are ever likely to see, while Dani Alves hit the bar after the break.
Earlier, Jose Fonte's 56th-minute header had Lille on course to take all three points away to Reims, but substitute Remi Oudin's 78th-minute leveller - initially ruled out for offside but then given after a Video Assistant Referee review - denied the visitors.
Lille are more concerned with holding off the teams below them as they look to secure second place, which provides automatic qualification for next season's Champions League group stage.
The draw at the Stade Auguste-Delaune moved them five points clear of third-placed Lyon, who slumped to a shock 3-1 loss at home to relegation-threatened Dijon on Saturday.
"If we had won I think we would have sealed our place on the podium," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier.
"We are 11 points ahead of Saint-Etienne but there are still 21 points to play for."
Fourth-placed Saint-Etienne drew 2-2 at Amiens on Saturday, while Marseille, in fifth spot, were beaten 2-0 at Bordeaux on Friday.
Reims are just a point behind Marseille in sixth and are level on points with Patrick Vieira's Nice, who beat Montpellier 1-0.

Football: Huddersfield move closer to relegation, Burnley in trouble

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield slipped closer to Premier League relegation as the bottom club blew a two-goal lead in their 4-3 defeat at West Ham, while Burnley are in deep trouble after losing 2-1 against 10-man Leicester on Saturday (March 16).
Jan Siewert's side looked to have kept alive their faint hopes of beating the drop as they raced into a 3-1 lead in east London.
But a second-half collapse culminated in Javier Hernandez's last-gasp winner for West Ham, leaving Huddersfield 16 points from safety with only seven games remaining.
"For me it's hard to describe at the moment. I'm disappointed and to be honest I can't believe it," Siewert said.
"I have thousands of thoughts. I don't want to talk about the best performances. I want to win games."
Mark Noble put West Ham ahead with a 15th-minute penalty after 18-year-old Aaron Rowe, making his first professional start, brought down Manuel Lanzini.
Huddersfield were level just two minutes later when Juninho Bacuna headed in from Aaron Mooy's corner for the Terriers' first away league goal since Boxing Day.
Karlan Grant gave Huddersfield the lead with a close-range finish in the 30th minute and the January signing from Charlton scored again in the 65th minute with a fantastic 20-yard strike.
But Angelo Ogbonna reduced the deficit with 15 minutes left and Hernandez completed West Ham's gritty fightback with an 84th-minute header from Samir Nasri's cross.
Former Manchester United striker Hernandez wasn't finished yet and he struck again in the final seconds with a header from Felipe Anderson's cross.

At Turf Moor, Burnley's survival bid was dented as they were rocked by Leicester.
Leicester defender Harry Maguire was sent off in the fourth minute for a trip on Johann Berg Gudmundsson as the Burnley midfielder ran clear on goal.
It was the fastest Premier League red card in four years, but Leicester weren't fazed as James Maddison opened the scoring with a superb 33rd-minute free-kick.

Burnley's teenage forward Dwight McNeil equalised with a fine finish in the 38th minute.
But Leicester snatched the points in the 90th minute when defender Wes Morgan struck after Youri Tielemans' cross deflected into his path.
Burnley are one place and two points above the relegation zone, with third-bottom Cardiff holding a game in hand.
"It can play with you psychologically when someone gets sent off so early. We didn't get to grips with the game in the first half," frustrated Burnley boss Sean Dyche said.
"Our use of the ball wasn't good enough, we didn't create enough chances."
In the day's other game, Matt Ritchie's last-gasp equaliser rescued Newcastle in their 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
Salomon Rondon blasted Newcastle into the lead with his 10th goal of the season, this one a powerful free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
However, Josh King equalised with 48th-minute penalty awarded for Federico Fernandez's foul on Nathan Ake.
King's second goal arrived in the 81st minute after good work from Dominic Solanke, but Ritchie had the last word with a fierce half-volley.
On Sunday, Liverpool can replace Manchester City on top of the table if they win at Fulham, while Chelsea look to improve their top four prospects at Everton.

On-loan Denis Suarez will be an asset to Arsenal: Unai Emery

LONDON • Pundits and experts alike had predicted a quiet January transfer window and so it proved on deadline day yesterday, with Premier League clubs prioritising loan deals, often with an option to buy in the summer, rather than permanent signings.
Arsenal announced the signing of Spain midfielder Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the term, with a view to purchase for £20 million (S$35.3 million) in the close season.
The 25-year-old will link up again with Unai Emery, whom he worked with during a loan spell at Sevilla in 2014-15.
The Gunners boss said on the club website: "He is a player we know well and he brings us quality and options in many different attacking positions."
Suarez, who could make his debut on Sunday at his former club Manchester City, barely featured for the Spanish champions this season, with only two LaLiga appearances off the bench.
But he said he had come to the Emirates to play as much as possible and try to help the team qualify for the Champions League.
Endearing himself to the home faithful by claiming he would "like to win the Europa League with Arsenal", he said: "(They) were a team that really inspired me. I used to watch (Dennis) Bergkamp and (Thierry) Henry. They're both legends of the club and, hopefully, we can follow in their footsteps."
Manchester United also strengthened their squad - by securing the long-term future of a key player.
They announced a new deal for Anthony Martial, whose contract situation had been uncertain earlier in the season, which will keep him at the club until 2024.
It is thought the France forward would have left had Jose Mourinho still been in charge, but his sacking and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss prompted the turnaround.
Solskjaer was also pleased that the 23-year-old, who has eight goals in 18 league games, had committed his best years to United, hailing him as "one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with".
There was, however, an imminent exit at Old Trafford, with Marouane Fellaini agreeing a £10.4 million move to Chinese Super League outfit Shandong Luneng. Yesterday, the Belgium midfielder posted a picture of himself at the airport preparing to jet off to China on Instagram. According to the Daily Mail, the 31-year-old will earn £235,000 a week.
At press time, the biggest surprise of the window appeared to be Newcastle owner Mike Ashley finally dipping into his pockets to appease their long-suffering fans.
The Magpies broke their transfer record, which had stood for 14 years when they landed Michael Owen for £16.8 million in 2005, with the capture of Miguel Almiron from Major League Soccer side Atlanta for £21 million.
Rafael Benitez had been tracking the Paraguay midfielder, who is widely considered one of the best talents in the MLS, for a year and was delighted to have finally secured the 24-year-old's services.
The manager told the club website: "His impact in MLS has been really good. He's been one of the best players this year and, hopefully, he can give us more competition and more quality in the final third."

Football: China all but confirmed as 2023 Asian Cup hosts after South Korea withdraws

(Reuters) - China was all but confirmed as the host nation of the next Asian Cup tournament in 2023 after the only other bidders South Korea withdrew from the process.
The Korean Football Association (KFA) notified the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) of their intention to withdraw in a letter on Wednesday (May 15), paving the way for China to host the tournament for the second time.
The world's most populous nation last hosted the continental championship in 2004, when they lost the final 3-1 to Japan in Beijing.
"We need to make a choice between the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and the Women's World Cup," KFA secretary general Chun Hanjin said in a statement on the organisation's website.
"We decided to focus on the Women's World Cup strategically.
"In case of the Women's World Cup, Fifa and the government will actively support the joint hosting of the two Koreas."
The KFA in March announced a joint bid with North Korea to host the 2023 Women's World Cup. Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa have also expressed interest.
The AFC are scheduled to announce the 2023 Asian Cup hosts on June 4.
Qatar, the hosts of the next World Cup in 2022, won their first Asian Cup title earlier this year with a 3-1 victory over Japan in the United Arab Emirates.

Arsenal must be on Spurs' tail: Emery

Arsenal must be on Spurs' tail: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery believes the opportunity to cut the gap to Tottenham to just one point in the Premier League will be a "big motivation" for his players ahead of tomorrow's north London derby.
Arsenal warmed up for the clash at Wembley with a 5-1 home trouncing of Bournemouth, courtesy of goals from Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Laurent Koscielny, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, and the Gunners manager urged his team to "take the opportunity like today, these three points".
The Spaniard told reporters: "They are still ahead of us in the table, and it's difficult to win there, but it's a good test."
Fourth-placed Arsenal currently have 56 points, four behind Spurs.
Emery was non-committal about whether Ozil, who impressed after making his first league start since Jan 29, would start tomorrow.
He added: "I'm going to watch the match back and Tottenham's, and after that, I will decide our game plan with every player."
Like Ozil, Romelu Lukaku has not played as much as he would have liked under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but the Belgium striker "grabbed his chance" with a brace to end his nine-game barren run as Manchester United eased to a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace.
Ashley Young added a third and the Red Devils secured a club-record eighth straight away win.
Solskjaer singled out Lukaku and Luke Shaw for praise after United stretched their unbeaten league run to 11 games under him.
He said: "Shaw is in a good vein of form at the moment. Lukaku has been putting a shift in for the team... he was a No. 9 again today."

Ole rues missed chances

Ole rues missed chances

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has described the 2-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday and the consequent failure to apply pressure in the race for the Premier League's top four as his "lowest" point since taking charge of Manchester United in December.
The caretaker manager also blamed his first defeat in 13 league matches on missed chances.
Romelu Lukaku and Fred hit the woodwork as United failed to score for the first time in 22 away games in all competitions this season, missing the chance to move level on points with Tottenham in third place in the league.
"The performance was good, but the result was disappointing... we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs," Solskjaer said. "It is one of those days you have to dust yourselves down from.
"We created miles more chances than we did when we won here in the FA Cup (a 3-1 fourth-round victory in January). Sometimes, you don't take them and we just didn't take them.
"We have won games we have not deserved to win, and today we lost a game we did not deserve to lose. Hopefully, we will be ready for Wolves in the FA Cup next week."
While Solskjaer admitted his players "did not have the zip" at the Emirates, ending a club record of nine straight away wins, he also attributed the loss to a soft spot kick decision, which was converted by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
"The referee (Jon Moss) will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty," he said.
"I don't think there's enough contact there (on Alexandre Lacazette). It's not a dive, but apparently, Fred is very strong."
Although pundits blamed United goalkeeper David de Gea after he was caught wrong-footed for Granit Xhaka's long-range opener, Solskjaer exonerated him from fault as the Arsenal midfielder had struck the ball like a Brazilian.
Former United defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports the Spain No. 1 had "made a big mistake" and "it was a determining factor", while former Leeds defender Danny Mills told BBC Radio Five Live it was "an incredibly poor error (as) it wasn't a particularly well-hit shot".
But Solskjaer dismissed Xhaka's strike as "one of those things", adding: "I don't class it as a mistake. We didn't put enough pressure on (him), it swerves and moves. It goes to David's left and changes direction completely."
The Norwegian's sombre mood was, however, in contrast to Unai Emery's players, who seized the opportunity to mock Jesse Lingard after the game.
The United forward, who did not play owing to injury, had incensed the Gunners with his moon-walk celebration after scoring in the FA Cup meeting and for tagging the Emirates as his "dance floor" on his Instagram account.
Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil referenced him in a post-match tweet which read: "Dance floor huh?! Superb performance! Brilliant result! Thank you Emirates Stadium! Proud to be a Gunner!"
Goalkeeper Bernd Leno also revealed the team were "motivated" to gain a measure of revenge over Lingard. The German said: "In your mind, you will never forget something like that.
"You don't want to see it again... we knew before the game about our chance because United had one more point than us.
"Now we have a two-point lead. We are in the top four and the other teams now wait for our mistakes."

Football: Late Iraqi free-kick breaks Vietnamese hearts at Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Ali Adnan swept home a brilliant, last-minute free-kick as former champions Iraq twice hit back to beat Vietnam 3-2 in the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 8).
It was a heart-breaking way for Vietnam to lose in Abu Dhabi, but no more than Iraq deserved for going for the jugular after Humam Tareq had hauled them level on the hour mark.
"The first half was horrible," said Iraq coach Srecko Katanec.
"We showed nothing that we did in training - no power, no personality at all. Maybe it was first-game emotions, the players felt the pressure a little bit."
"I knew it would be a tough game," added the Slovenian.
"But the most important thing was the three points."
Vietnam's Golden Dragons took a shock lead after 24 minutes in the Group D clash in Abu Dhabi, defender Ali Faez panicking under pressure from Nguyen Cong Phuong and clumsily backheeling the ball past goalkeeper Jalal Hassan Hachim.
Iraq, who defied the odds to win an emotional Asian Cup title in 2007, levelled 10 minutes later through striker Mohanad Ali, who profited from a defensive error to rifle home from the edge of the box.
Cong Phuong restored Vietnam's lead three minutes before the break, stabbing in from close range after Nguyen Trong Huang's shot had been parried by Hachim.
But Tareq lashed home a second equaliser following more horrific defending from the Vietnamese, who by that point looked to be running out of steam.

LAZY FOUL

A lazy foul on the edge of the penalty area subsequently presented Adnan with the chance to take all three points and he did not disappoint, curling a left-foot shot into the top corner, prompting several Vietnamese players to slump to the turf in despair.
Iraq join Iran on three points after their bitter rivals thrashed Yemen 5-0 on Monday.
Iraq's circumstances have scarcely improved since thir fairytale success 12 years ago, with security concerns impacting their preparations for tournaments.
But the Lions of Mesopotamia will hope to at least match their run to the Asian Cup semi-finals in Australia four years ago, despite losing several of their top players to retirement.
"If we want to go deep into the tournament we will have to improve," shrugged Katanec.
"But I have a clearer picture now of our overall condition and we will grow into the tournament."
Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo, who steered his side to the southeast Asian title last December, insisted he had no regrets.
"I'm proud of my players," said the South Korean.
"At the end they were exhausted and lost a bit of concentration but we were a little unlucky too."
"We were targeting a point from this game because we play Iran next and obviously they're title favourites," he added.
"It will be very tough from here but we will go again."

Football: Arsenal's top-four hopes dented by defeat at Wolves

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Arsenal's fragility on the road returned as a 3-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday (April 24) put a huge dent in their hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Unai Emery's side needed only a point to reclaim fourth spot from Chelsea but conceded three times before the break against a clinical Wolves side who moved up to seventh.
Ruben Neves opened the scoring with a superb 28th minute free kick before Matt Doherty's glancing header made it 2-0 nine minutes later.
Dreadful Arsenal defending allowed Diogo Jota to surge through and fire a shot past Bernd Leno on the stroke of halftime.
A late Sokratis Papastathopoulos header from Granit Xhaka's cross was scant consolation for the Gunners fans who watched their side lose a seventh away league game this season.
With three games left Arsenal remain in fifth place with 66 points, a point behind Chelsea and four behind third-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester United are sixth with 64.
Wolves rose to seventh spot with 51 points - a position that could offer a route into European football next season - and are set to become the first promoted club to finish in the top eight since Reading in 2006-07.
Arsenal have now lost two matches in a row following Sunday's home defeat by Crystal Palace and they may need the backup option of winning the Europa League to claim a place in next season's Champions League.
Emery remained confident they can finish in the top four.
"We can be frustrated but the Premier League is about being consistent over 38 matches," the Spaniard said.
"Today, we're disappointed but we need to remember how we were three months ago.
"We can be optimistic and recover for the top four."
Arsenal dominated possession in the first 20 minutes but Joao Moutinho served notice of Wolves' threat as he curled wide after a flowing counter-attack.
Nacho Monreal was then penalised for a foul on Jota and Neves sent his curling free kick past Leno.
Arsenal switched off at a corner in the 37th minute, allowing Moutinho and Jonny to exchange passes before the latter's cross was glanced by Doherty past a flailing Leno.
In first-half stoppage time Arsenal carelessly conceded possession and Jota's angled shot beat Leno.
Arsenal did tighten up after the break but the damage had already been done.
Incredibly Wolves have now picked up 16 points in their matches against the current top six this season with wins over Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United and now Arsenal.

City angered by further probe

City angered by further probe

LONDON • Manchester City yesterday hit out in a strongly worded statement after a Uefa probe into allegations of Financial Fair Play (FFP) irregularities was sent for a final judgment at European football's governing body.
The chairman and chief investigator of Uefa's Club Financial Control Body investigatory chamber, Yves Leterme, has concluded City have a case to answer and has referred the matter to the adjudicatory chamber, which will rule on the matter.
Members of the investigatory chamber are thought to have recommended a Champions League ban if the allegations of misleading Uefa over FFP are proved.
City, who have denied wrongdoing, expressed anger and are expected to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if Uefa finds the club guilty.
An official statement read: "Manchester City is disappointed, but regrettably not surprised, by the sudden announcement of the referral to be made by the chief investigator Yves Leterme.
"The leaks to media over the last week are indicative of the process that has been overseen by Mr Leterme.
"Manchester City is entirely confident of a positive outcome when the matter is considered by an independent judicial body.
"The accusation of financial irregularities remains entirely false and the referral ignores a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence provided by Manchester City.
"The decision contains mistakes, misinterpretations and confusions fundamentally borne out of a basic lack of due process."
The club have been facing allegations since November that they falsely declared as sponsorships worth millions of pounds that were in fact an investment from the club's owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan of Abu Dhabi's ruling family.
The accusations are based on "leaked" internal City e-mails and other documents published by German magazine Der Spiegel.
Uefa's statement yesterday read: "The Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) chief investigator, after having consulted with the other members of the independent investigatory chamber of the CFCB, has today decided to refer Manchester City to the CFCB adjudicatory chamber following the conclusion of his investigation.
"The CFCB investigatory chamber had opened an investigation into Manchester City on March 7, 2019 for potential breaches of FFP regulations that were made public in various media outlets.
"Uefa will not be making any further comment on the matter."
No timescale has been put on when a verdict was expected.

Football: Mourinho rejects offers, reveals fragile ego at United
LONDON • Jose Mourinho revealed that he has turned down three job offers since being sacked by Manchester United last month, adding he was happy to bide his time before taking on his next challenge.
Speaking in his role as a pundit for broadcaster beIN Sports during the Asian Cup on Saturday, the Portuguese also said rivals Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp enjoyed more support at their clubs.
"I am happy with these three weeks, I am happy with this experience and I am going to have other experiences that normally I cannot have," Mourinho said.
"But I know me and, I know by the end of March, I will be struggling with my happiness.
"I will analyse things, I don't like to speak about it. But I've refused already three options because I didn't feel that it is what I want, so I'm going to be calm in this aspect."
At United, Mourinho was left frustrated in the close-season transfer window when Liverpool, in particular, strengthened markedly and Manchester City added to a squad already deep in quality.
"At Man City in the first season, Guardiola was not a champion. In the second season, Pep made great decisions, but those that were supported. In the same summer, he sold four full-backs and bought four backs.
"At Liverpool, how many players were there before Jurgen Klopp arrived? If you are a manager and you choose the players to follow your idea, that's one thing.
"The other thing is when you are not able to do that."
Mourinho also claimed that modern footballers have such fragile egos that one United player asked not to be criticised in front of his team-mates.
"When I coach on the pitch, I like to see myself free because I am in family and I want to be able to criticise everyone," he said.
"I had one player say, he was very polite and not confrontational, 'Please, when you criticise me, can you do it in private?'.
"I said why and he said, 'Because it's my stature in front of the other players, when you criticise me I don't feel comfortable'.
"He was one of the top players of his generation. Nowadays you have to be very smart in the way you read your players and their personalities."
