Real top football's rich list, United down to third
LONDON • European champions Real Madrid displaced Manchester United as the world's highest-earning football club after the Premier League side's underperformance on the pitch in recent seasons ate into their dominance off it.
United slumped to third place, below both Real and Barcelona based on revenue for the 2017-18 season, financial services firm Deloitte said in its annual Football Money League yesterday.
The Red Devils have been the wealthiest club for two of the past three years and eight times in the last two decades.
Clubs in the Premier League - which has the highest broadcast revenue - took six of the top-10 spots, but LaLiga's two biggest teams prevailed thanks to their Champions League prowess and supremacy at home.
The changing of the guard in football's financial list mirrors the contrasting on-field fortunes of United and Real of late. Santiago Solari's men have won the Champions League for the last three seasons while, in the same period, United have failed to get past the last 16.
Their annual revenue was also hit by a slump in the British pound, growing only 1.5 per cent to £590 million (S$1 billion). Real, on the other hand, surged 11 per cent to €751 million (S$1.1 billion).
A spokesman for United said the club were "not too concerned" about financial league tables from year to year as the team remain a top global sports brand by any measure.
Part of their confidence lies in the fact that the Premier League still dominates the money pile.
There are a further five English top-flight teams in the top 10, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, with even relegation-threatened Newcastle making the top-20 cut despite going trophyless since 1969.
Tottenham, who are waiting to move into a 62,000-capacity stadium, re-entered the top 10 for the first time since the 2006-07 term.
Italian Serie A champions Juventus, meanwhile, dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the 2010-11 season despite signing former Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in the close season.
Weaker broadcast revenue in Italy relative to other big European leagues means Juventus have to do better than their rivals in the Champions League to bridge the gap.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are backed by wealthy Middle East owners, are in fifth and sixth place.
Both are, however, facing claims they have breached the Financial Fair Play regulations, but City and PSG have denied any wrongdoing.

BARCELONA • Still, they gasp.
Still, after all Lionel Messi has done, long after his brilliance should have become commonplace, he can still bring a Nou Camp crowd of nearly 100,000 to its feet.
Even when everything is in flux - when Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo can miss out on the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2010, when guards seem to be changing - a 3-0 quarter-final, second-leg win over Manchester United featured football's one great, enduring constant.
That is Messi beaming after scoring and opponents left staring at a genius that defies belief.
This is, at a rough estimate, the fourth iteration of Messi, the latest in a series of upgrades from a winger to playing centrally to a false nine and now a position that defies categorisation.
It is tempting to wonder if this is going to be his ultimate form - listed as an attacker, but no longer hidebound by fixed positions.
He now goes where he likes, when he likes on the pitch, stationing himself in whatever position he thinks will cause most damage.
His teammates make the necessary adjustments as the Argentinian gets to work, which United found to their detriment on Tuesday night as he bagged his 23rd and 24th goals against English clubs - more than any other player.
But his genius is not something Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde "is going to apologise for".
He said post-game: "Messi always gets us out of trouble... Leo always turns up in the important games, not just in the big moments, but throughout the whole game."
There are, without doubt, flaws in this Barcelona team, spaces to exploit, weaknesses to expose. Yet as long as the 31-year-old is playing, they may not matter, with his side into the semi-finals for the first time since 2015.
While he is not taking anything for granted, declaring "any team (in the last four) is complicated", Messi is now three games from equalling Ronaldo's record of five Champions League winning medals.
Although his rival extended his record goal tally in the competition to 126, he was unable to end Juve's 23-year European Cup drought - the reason he was signed last July.
Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri has, however, defended him and their €100 million (S$153 million) outlay, insisting: "Ronaldo gave us a lot during the season. We signed him to increase our chances... In football, one plus one doesn't always make two. "
Italian dailies have likened their exit to an "apocalypse" as Juve shares yesterday lost more than €270 million, or 16 per cent.
Spanish news outlets, on the other hand, believe that with Messi, "this is our year".

Almoez Ali scoring with an overhead kick in the 12th minute to give Qatar the lead against Japan in yesterday's Asian Cup final at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi. His goal bettered Iranian Ali Daei's 1996 tally of eight goals at a single continental championship.
Qatar, hosts of the 2022 World Cup, won their first major honour in international football when they stunned four-time champions Japan 3-1. The Sudan-born 22-year-old Ali and his teammate Bassam Al-Rawi were the subject of a protest by the UAE Football Association over their eligibility to represent Qatar, but this was dismissed by the Asian Football Confederation hours before the kick-off. Midfielder Abdulaziz Hatem doubled the lead in the 27th minute before Takumi Minamino pulled one back in the 69th minute to set up a grandstand finish. The Qataris sealed victory in the 83rd minute when Akram Afif converted a penalty after Japanese captain Maya Yoshida handled the ball in the area.

Pochettino wants Spurs to be brave
Pochettino wants Spurs to be brave
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino has challenged Tottenham to seize their unexpected chance to make history as they try to overturn a 1-0 deficit at Ajax in their Champions League semi-final today.
The manager is convinced Spurs can still reach their maiden Champions League final despite losing the first leg at home last week.
"Yes, it's possible," said a defiant Pochettino, when asked if his side could still make the final.
"It's possible if you play bravely and play with a winning mentality. That is the most important thing.
"We have ahead two finals against Ajax and Everton and it's in our hands to be in a good position at the end of the season.
"No one believed we would be in this position in the last week of the competition. We are in a position where it depends on us to be in the (Champions League) final or not, and then it depends on us to finish in the (Premier League) top four."
Tottenham go into their biggest game for decades today on a low note after conceding in added time to lose 1-0 at Bournemouth last Saturday. It was a third successive loss in all competitions as they finished with nine men after red cards for Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth.
But Spurs, who play Everton in their final Premier League game on Sunday, are all but certain to finish at least fourth and qualify for the Champions League after Arsenal and Manchester United were both held to draws last Sunday.
Pochettino said: "It's a massive week and that's why we need to move on and be ready again. But, whatever happens, I am going to feel proud."
Son will be back from his ban to inject dynamism and penetration missing from the first leg as Tottenham try to reach their first European final since the 1984 Uefa Cup.
But they will also have to focus on the challenge presented by Ajax's vibrant young side led by their 19-year-old captain Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, 21 and Donny van de Beek, 22.
Van de Beek, recalling the first leg where he gave Ajax a precious away goal, told the club website: "We played too many long balls. That is not our game and our quality.
"We have to stay focused like we have before, stay calm and play our own game.
"You saw it against Real Madrid, in the group stage against Bayern Munich that we can make it difficult for anyone. We have also shown that we can beat anyone."
While a goalless draw will be enough to take them to the final, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag wants his fully fit side to go for a win.
"We need to win this match tomorrow, that will be our mindset", ten Hag said at a pre-match press conference yesterday. "We have to stick to our own strengths."
The Dutch side initially dominated Tottenham during the first leg last week, but they struggled in the second half as Spurs put pressure on their defence.
"Our minds were a bit too much on defending the lead," ten Hag said. "But it was also a show of strength by Spurs.
"It showed we have to cross another frontier tomorrow. But we are confident we can do it. We are fit and we are eager."

MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, urging his team to end the season on a high.
A MATCH FOR ANYONE
You saw it against Real Madrid, in the group stage against Bayern Munich that we can make it difficult for anyone. We have also shown that we can beat anyone.
DONNY VAN DE BEEK, Ajax midfielder, on his team feeling confident of their chances to reach the Champions League final.

PORTO • Spain's World Cup-winning captain Iker Casillas has told his fans that he is "feeling strong" after suffering a heart attack while training with Portuguese champions Porto on Wednesday.
Hospital medical reports revealed there was an obstruction of the right coronary artery for the 37-year-old, who has won all the major honours in the game, including the 2010 World Cup and three Champions League trophies.
The goalkeeper, who has already been ruled out of playing for the remainder of Porto's season, tweeted on Wednesday: "Everything under control here, it was a big scare. Thanks a lot for all your messages and your support."
Get-well wishes poured in from the footballing community after the news broke, with Real Madrid offering "all our support" for their former captain, their second-most capped player behind striker Raul Gonzalez (741).
The Spanish national team, of which Casillas has the all-time record of 167 caps, tweeted: "All the family at the national team and the Spanish football federation are with you. Get well soon."
Cristiano Ronaldo, his former Real teammate, also posted on his Instagram page an image of the pair together with the message: "Have strength, my friend. I hope you get well soon."
One of Spain's best-known sporting personalities, "Saint Iker" came through Real's academy and spent the bulk of his career there, making 725 appearances between 1999 and 2015 before joining Porto.
Spanish sports website Don Balon claims that the heart attack was probably the result of genetic issues because it is uncommon for people under 40 to suffer from the problem.
It also said that Casillas would have to consider hanging up his boots given the chances of the issue occurring again if he continues playing top-level football.

Football: Mohamed Salah retains African award to seal great day for Egypt
DAKAR (AFP) - Mohamed Salah completed a memorable day for Egyptian football by retaining his African Player of the Year title in Senegal on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 26-year-old Liverpool star finished first with club-mate Senegalese Sadio Mane and Arsenal and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the other finalists.
It was an identical outcome to last year when Salah became only the second Egyptian after 1983 winner Mahmoud al Khatib to be voted the best footballer in Africa.
Egypt crushed sole rivals South Africa 16-1 earlier on Tuesday in a CAF executive committee vote in Dakar to decide which country succeeded Cameroon as 2019 Cup of Nations hosts.
Delays to preparations and concerns about security resulted in the central African nation being replaced as hosts, and they will stage the 2021 tournament instead.
While the 15-vote winning margin for Egypt was unexpected, the success of Salah was anticipated as he continues to score regularly for the English Premier League leaders.
Salah netted 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season - his first with the Anfield club - and has bagged 13 Premier League goals so far this season.
Ironically, Aubameyang has scored one league goal more than Salah, topping the charts with Tottenham Hotspur and England star Harry Kane on 14.
Salah was born in a northern Egyptian town Nagrig and used to make eight-hour return trips on buses to train with Cairo-based El Mokawloon (Arab Contractors).
Spotted by scouts from Swiss club Basel, he moved there in 2012 before joining Premier League giants Chelsea two years later.
Salah found scoring difficult early in his professional career and was nicknamed "chancentod" (chance killer) by the Swiss media.
Later, playing for Chelsea in a League Cup tie, the Egyptian was so off-target with a goal attempt that the ball trickled over the touchline for a throw-in.
Unhappy with his two-goal return, Chelsea lent Salah to Italian outfits Fiorentina and Roma, then sold him to the latter club.
Salah blossomed in Rome, averaging close to a goal every two matches, and Liverpool paid almost £37 million (S$64 million) to sign him two years ago.
The Egyptian had his share of setbacks last year, too, with an injury in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid also keeping him out of a World Cup defeat by Uruguay.
He returned to score against hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia, but the Pharaohs exited their first appearance at the global showpiece in 28 years without securing even one point.
Salah netted twice and missed two penalties three months later in a 6-0 Cup of Nations rout of Niger and snatched the late winner in a 3-2 victory over Tunisia in the same competition.
Having defended his Player of the Year title, his next goal will be to match the four straight wins in the competition by former Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure.
The other male awards went to France-born Morocco coach Herve Renard, the Mauritania national team, and Moroccan Achraf Hakimi in the youth category.
South African Chrestinah Kgatlana was voted Women's Player of the Year and South Africa coach Desiree Ellis and the Nigeria national team were the other female winners.
The Goal of the Year award also went to Kgatlana.

Sacked Mourinho heading back to Madrid?
Sacked Mourinho heading back to Madrid?
MADRID • It may be only five days since Jose Mourinho's sacking by Manchester United, but the Portuguese could be back in management sooner rather than later.
Spanish daily El Pais has reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is considering a reunion with his former coach.
With the Spanish giants still reeling from Zinedine Zidane's departure, having sacked his replacement Julen Lopetegui in October and then appointing the inexperienced Santiago Solari, some Spanish media reports have said Perez could be tempted to bring Mourinho back.
The Portuguese, who was sacked by United on Tuesday, was with Real between 2010 and 2013, winning the LaLiga title with a record 100 points, scoring 121 goals, as well as lifting the Copa del Rey.
It was also reported that an "internal survey" has shown that the team believe Mourinho can steer Real back in the right direction following their tumble this season.
Although Solari has led Real to 10 wins in 12 games since succeeding Lopetegui, the team have faced plenty of criticism for some insipid recent performances. They have fallen five points behind leaders and bitter rivals Barcelona in the LaLiga title race.
While Spanish sports newspaper Marca dismissed the speculation about a Mourinho return, reporting that Real's club directors are not thinking about hiring him "in the short term or in the long term", that did not stop their colleagues in the media from grilling Real captain Sergio Ramos on Friday.
The Spaniard was forced to bat away questions about a Mourinho return at a press conference ahead of yesterday's Club World Cup final against United Arab Emirates side Al Ain.
"Mourinho left us five years ago yet everyone keeps talking about him. People need to show more respect to the coach we have now," the exasperated Ramos said.
"I'm not the person who decides which coach comes here or doesn't, some people seem to think that the captains decide which coach Real Madrid appoints."
Another of Mourinho's former clubs Inter Milan are also said to be eyeing his signature after Luciano Spalletti's failure to take them to the Champions League knockout stages this term, while British tabloid The Sun said that the 55-year-old could be set for a shock move to Wolverhampton.
Meanwhile, United forward Alexis Sanchez has denied rumours that he made a bet with teammate Marcos Rojo about Mourinho's sacking, reported the BBC.
It was said that Sanchez told Rojo to pay him £20,000 (S$34,731) after the axing materialised, a story which he called "false".

Spanish daily El Pais has reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is considering a reunion with his former coach.

MUNICH (REUTERS) - Germany coach Joachim Low's decision to end Thomas Muller's international career has left the Bayern Munich midfielder "angry" and struggling to come to terms with the manner in which he received the news.
Low said on Tuesday (March 5) that the 29-year-old Muller and his Bayern teammates, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng, both 30, were no longer part of Germany's plans as they look to move on from their group stage exit from last year's World Cup.
The trio were part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in 2014 and Muller said the sudden nature of the announcement had left a bitter taste.
"The more I think about it, the more the way it was done makes me angry," Muller said in a video on Instagram. "The coach's decision left me puzzled.
"A coach must make sporting decisions, I don't have a problem with that. But it's mostly the character of the decision that I don't understand. Mats, Jerome and I are still able to play at the highest level.
"The press releases of the German football federation and its president (Reinhard Grindel), prepared in advance, were from my point of view in bad taste and showed a lack of consideration."
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge questioned the timing of the announcement in a joint statement with the club's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.
Â
"The last Germany international was played on Nov. 19," Rummenigge said. "We're disappointed that the players and the public have been informed of this decision some three and a half months later, before crucial games for Bayern.
"We were surprised this happened as part of an unannounced visit by Low and (team director) Oliver Bierhoff to Bayern."

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City's England forward Raheem Sterling has been awarded The Integrity and Impact Award at this year's BT Sport Industry Awards for speaking out on a range of social issues, including racism.
Sterling was recognised for his fight against racism in the sport and for using his platform to call for more action to be taken. He had said this month that more players needed to speak out when they suffered racism to eradicate it from the game.
"I was just speaking about my personal experiences, I didn't expect it to get so much attention, I just wanted to bring it to the attention of my audience on Instagram," Sterling said as he received the award from his England coach Gareth Southgate.
"It's been really pleasing to see people listening and trying and do better. Partly what happens when you try to do good things is you set examples for the next generation coming through."
The 24-year-old also signed a manifesto earlier this week where he said clubs should be handed automatic nine-point deductions and ordered to play three games behind closed doors if their supporters indulged in racist behaviour.
Sterling, who began his career at Liverpool, said the example of his former captain Steven Gerrard encouraged him to try to develop into a role model.
"Coming from Liverpool, I had people around me like Steven Gerrard that I looked up to and I'm looking at him and thinking 'what can I do within myself to be half the person and player he was'," he added.
"You take little things and each year you try and develop them and become better not just on the field but off it as well."
Dow Jones Sports Intelligence, the founder of the award, congratulated Sterling for the impact his actions had in addressing racism and other "social issues of diversity and inclusivity".
"He has given new confidence and a voice to other footballers and athletes to speak out when once they may not have done so," Dow Jones head of sport Simon Greenberg said in a statement issued on Thursday.
"He has sparked the sports media and the industry more widely to consider conscious or sub-conscious racial bias in their actions."
England manager Southgate received the Leadership in Sport Award on behalf of the FA for building a new atmosphere in the dressing room which helped his team reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Kompany's next stop: Anderlecht as player-manager
Kompany's next stop: Anderlecht as player-manager
LONDON • Vincent Kompany announced yesterday that he will leave Manchester City after 11 trophy-laden years to become player-manager of Anderlecht.
Belgian defender Kompany joined City in 2008 and made 360 appearances, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.
The club captain signed off by lifting the FA Cup trophy on Saturday after City thrashed Watford 6-0 to complete a domestic treble.
"As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out," said the 33-year-old, who was in tears after scoring a dramatic long-range winner against Leicester in City's final home game of the season on May 6.
"I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club."
Anderlecht is the Belgian club where Kompany began his professional career before joining Hamburg and he admitted he is relishing the chance to move into management.
"For the next three years, I will take up the role of player-manager of Anderlecht. Belgium's finest," he wrote on Facebook.
"This may come as a surprise to you. It's the most passionate yet rational decision I've ever made.
"(Club owner) Sheikh Mansour changed my life and that of all the City fans around the world, for that I am forever grateful.
"A blue nation has arisen and challenged the established order of things, I find that awesome."
Kompany, who featured in only 17 of City's 38 league games this season because of muscle problems, also paid tribute to his teammates and manager Pep Guardiola.
"It's cliche to say it, but it's also so true: without my teammates, I would have never been here today," he said.
"So to all of you, from the 2008-2009 squad to today's domestic treble winners: I owe you guys!
"A special word also to Pep and the backroom staff: you've been superb... Thank you so much."
In September, City will hold Kompany's testimonial match, from which he will donate all profits to Manchester's homeless.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told the club's official website: "There have been many important contributors to Manchester City's renaissance, but arguably none are more important than Vincent Kompany. For a decade, he has been the lifeblood, the soul, and beating heart of a supremely talented squad.
"A booming voice in the dressing room yet a quiet and measured ambassador off it, Vincent can be as proud of himself as we are of him."
Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, Kompany's club and country teammate, tweeted: "Playing for about 10 years with this man for club and country. And what a privilege it's been.
"Big player, Big personality and big leader. Learnt a lot from you. Wishing you all the best for the future."

Vincent Kompany has led Manchester City to four Premier League titles.

LEICESTER, England (REUTERS) - A 92nd-minute goal from midfielder Victor Camarasa and a penalty save from goalkeeper Neil Etheridge ensured Cardiff City beat Leicester City 1-0 for their first away victory of the Premier League season on Saturday (Dec 29).
Claude Puel's Leicester, carrying momentum from consecutive wins against Chelsea and Manchester City, dominated the early exchanges at the King Power Stadium and came close with long-range efforts from James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira.
Leicester had their best chance of the first half in the closing stages when Jamie Vardy was slipped through by Maddison, only for the striker to shoot straight at Etheridge.
The hosts looked certain to claim consecutive home wins for the first time this season when Maddison was clipped inside the box by defender Sean Morrison but they were denied thanks to Etheridge's stunning save.
Maddison had a chance to make amends from the rebound but defender Sol Bamba dived in to turn the ball away for a corner.
With Leicester supporters heading towards the exit, Camarasa curled the ball past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from the edge of the box to secure a dramatic win for the Welsh side.
The victory takes Neil Warnock's Cardiff up to 16th place in the league standings, four points clear of the relegation zone.
Etheridge, who will miss the Philippines' Asian Cup campaign to help Cardiff's top-flight survival bid, said the result should lift the spirits in the dressing room during the second half of the season.
"It was a great save to help the team but the main thing for us today is the great win - our first away from home," the 28-year-old said.
"It gives us momentum going into the new year.
"We just need to keep focusing and keep concentrating. Obviously, it's a very tough league. To keep two clean sheets in a row is outstanding. The boys have done very well.
"We take every game as it comes. We've got a tough game against Tottenham on New Year's Day but we'll enjoy this one for now."
Leicester slipped to eighth spot after failing to capitalise on almost two-thirds of ball possession and 16 attempts on goal.

Football: European leagues wrestle with racism after French Ligue 1 abuse adds to litany of woes
PARIS (AFP) - The interruption of the Dijon-Amiens Ligue 1 match on Friday (April 12) after visiting captain Prince Gouano was the target of monkey chants adds to a string of recent racist incidents across Europe.
It comes after rising Italy star Moise Kean was targeted by racist abuse in Cagliari in Serie A earlier in the month.
Monkey chants were aimed at England players during a Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro and there has been a series of episodes involving London clubs.
"Racism exists in the stadiums in France, but we cannot put the situation on the same level as in Eastern European countries or Italy," football sociologist Nicolas Hourcade, a professor at the Central School of Lyon, told AFP.
The goal-less draw in Dijon was halted in the 78th minute as players from both sides stopped playing and headed towards the touchline after Gouano said he heard insults.
"It's over," he said. "We're not playing on. I'm taking off my team-mates."
Players including Gouano went to remonstrate with fans.
Referee Karim Abed also asked the stadium announcer to "get the message across, if it happens again, we stop"
Following discussions between players, coaches and officials, play then resumed.
"In Dijon, we saw that it was an isolated supporter who could be identified and arrested," Hourcade said.
"In other countries, there are collective demonstrations where a whole section of the ground, or a good part of one, can shout monkey chants or racist slogans."
After the game, the French league (LFP) said it would investigate and also announced that Dijon had identified the culprit. The club said it intended to press charges.
"These disgusting shouts are contrary to the values conveyed by sport, they insult our Republic, and I welcome the rapid reaction of the LFP: racism will never have a place in France," responded Interior Minister Christophe Castaner.
Anti-racism campaigners urge abandoning matches.
"We do not tackle the subject of racism as we should," former France captain Lilian Thuram told AFP in 2018, after Blaise Matuidi suffered abuse when Juventus played at Cagliari.
"Why didn't the referee stop the match, why didn't the white players leave the field?"
"If there is no deal with the problem, it will be the same thing in 20 years," he said.
Yet the same thing did happen when Juventus played at Cagliari on April 2. Kean, along with Matuidi and Brazilian Alex Sandro, were targeted by monkey noises and jeers throughout the match.
Instead of denouncing their fans, Cagliari's leadership blamed Kean for celebrating his late winner by standing motionless and silent with arms spread in front of the hostile stand.
"Italy is a case apart for two reasons," Hourcade said. "The historical strength of the extreme right, and the presence of openly fascist fan organisations."
But in England too, there have been numerous recent incidents at all levels of football.
On Thursday, half a dozen Chelsea fans posted a video on social media in which they sang that Liverpool's Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah, was a "bomber". Chelsea identified and barred three of the fans.
Arsenal are attempting to identify a fan who was caught on video shouting racist abuse at Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli in a Europa League game on Thursday.
In December, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling was the target of insults at Chelsea and a Tottenham fan threw a banana in the direction of Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
One of the major issues is "to identify the perpetrators of these acts to punish them", said Hourcade.
Spurs' England defender Danny Rose has blasted the game's rulers for failing to rein in racism, calling their efforts "a farce".

Football: Marouane Fellaini leaves Man United for Chinas Shandong
LONDON (AFP) – Manchester United announced on Friday (Feb 1) that midfielder Marouane Fellaini has left the club to join China’s Shandong Luneng on a permanent transfer.
The Belgium international, 31, arrived at Old Trafford from Everton in August 2013 and went on to make 177 appearances throughout five-and-a-half seasons at United, scoring 22 goals.
“Everybody at United thanks Marouane for his service and wishes him well for the future as he completes his move to Shandong Luneng Taishan FC in China,†said a statement on United’s website.
Fellaini joins fellow Belgian international midfielder Mousa Dembele in swapping the Premier League for the Chinese Super League after the 31-year-old signed for Guangzhou R&F from Tottenham last month.
The former Everton player, who last year signed a new and improved deal until 2020, was a key figure at Old Trafford under previous manager Jose Mourinho.
But he has featured only once, as a late substitute, in United’s seven Premier League games since Mourinho was sacked and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in as caretaker manager.
Shandong finished third in the CSL last season, 10 points behind champions Shanghai SIPG, and were runners-up in the Chinese FA Cup.
Graziano Pelle, the 33-year-old Italian striker, signed for Shandong from Southampton in July 2016 for about £13 million (S$23 million).
Bayern Munich back-up striker Sandro Wagner on Wednesday joined Tianjin Teda after the 31-year-old former Germany international received what Bayern called a “very attractive offerâ€.
Brazilians Hulk and Oscar, the latter purchased from Chelsea two years ago for an Asian-record €60 million (S$92 million), are among those playing in China and were central to SIPG’s maiden CSL title last season.
The new season begins on March 1.

Alexander-Arnold up for it against Rashford
Alexander-Arnold up for it against Rashford
LONDON • Two-time World Cup winner Cafu recently reminded Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, 20, not to get "big-headed".
But Liverpool and England need not worry about his ego, after he recounted his uncomfortable afternoon in Manchester last season.
Old Trafford, where Jurgen Klopp's team head in search of the Premier League leadership today, staged what Alexander-Arnold describes as one of the hardest moments of his career last March.
That day Jose Mourinho tasked Romelu Lukaku with disturbing Liverpool's central defence with his physicality and Marcus Rashford with tormenting the young right-back with his pace. Both delivered, Rashford scoring twice inside 24 minutes from Manchester United's left flank and shaping the contest.
It was a day of despair for the boyhood Liverpool fan, but it also served as motivation for a player who would go on to feature in the World Cup for England before his teenage years were over.
"I still use that game as a learning point," Alexander-Arnold says. "That is probably the best thing to do; look back on the harder games you've had, the tougher games, learn what I didn't do well and what I could have done better.
"The Manchester United game was definitely one of those games.
"But, rather than let it get me down, or put me down and think that maybe I am not good enough at this level, it was important to use it as a positive and see it as a learning step to improve.
"I needed to use it as motivation to make sure something like that doesn't happen again and to prove that you are better than you showed on that day."
Tuesday's Champions League stalemate with Bayern Munich was Alexander-Arnold's first competitive start since Jan 12.
His return is timely for Klopp, Liverpool's title prospects and for the opportunity to gauge his development against Rashford at Old Trafford 11 months on.
Rashford has been in outstanding form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with six goals in 12 appearances for United's caretaker manager, and Alexander-Arnold's respect for the striker runs deep.
"He is a fantastic player and someone who has got bags of potential," the defender admits. "I am sure he will keep up his good form and it will be a good battle for whoever is up against him."

Football: Chelsea bounce back to win 2-1 at Cardiff to boost top-four Premier League hopes
LONDON (DPA, THE GUARDIAN) - Chelsea came from behind to win 2-1 at Cardiff City on Sunday (March 31) and boost their hopes of finishing in the top four of the English Premier League.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek headed the winner in the 90th minute to put sixth-placed Chelsea (60 points) within one point of third-placed Tottenham and fourth-placed Manchester United. They are behind London rivals Arsenal, who play Newcastle on Monday night, on goal difference.
Victor Camarasa put Cardiff in front but Cezar Azpilcueta equalised, despite being offside, before Loftus-Cheek won it to leave Cardiff still third-bottom, five points from safety.
The Blues rode their luck as with less than 10 minutes remaining, Cardiff were leading 1-0 and the mood in the away end was mutinous.
"We want Sarri out" reverberated loud and clear time and again, so much so that it was tempting to wonder whether Chelsea's manager Maurizio Sarri was fighting to hold on to his job.
By the time the final whistle blew, the Chelsea fans were celebrating a victory that kept alive their top-four hopes and left Cardiff crestfallen.
The killer goal was Azpilicueta's equaliser, in the 84th minute, and it should never have been allowed to stand. The Chelsea captain was a yard offside as he nodded home Marcos Alonso's flick-on.
Â
Neil Warnock was furious, which is often the case although on this occasion it was impossible not to feel sympathy for the Cardiff manager.
Azpilicueta's goal will not be allowed to stand next season, when VAR is introduced in the Premier League.
