Football: Koreans urge 'Monster' Kim to choose Watford over Beijing

ABU DHABI (AFP) - South Korea defender Kim Min-jae's goal-scoring exploits at the Asian Cup have not gone unnoticed overseas, but teammates are urging him to follow Son Heung-min to England rather than go to China.
The 22-year-old centre-back, nicknamed "Monster", has burnished his reputation as one of the region's hottest prospects, scoring twice and proving formidable at the back as South Korea reached the quarter-finals.
Baek Sung-kwon, general manager of his current club Jeonbuk Motors, confirmed a bid from Premier League club Watford which is reported to be around US$8 million (S$10.9 million).
Beijing Guoan, who finished the 2018 Chinese Super League season in fourth, are also in the hunt but so far, Kim is keeping his cards close to his chest.
"Until now, I want to focus only on the Asian Cup," he said on Thursday (Jan 24).
"I just want to talk about getting good results and so, at the moment, I haven't got anything to say about (a transfer).
"I just want to focus on helping the team not concede any goals."
Kim is already an established international, but missed the 2018 World Cup through injury.
A move to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League proved the making of Kim's celebrated teammate Son, while Ki Sung-yueng and ex-Manchester United star Park Ji-sung have also prospered in England.
And while Kim may be staying silent, his Chinese-based teammates at the Asian Cup have been happy to give their advice - and they are urging him to take the plunge in England.
"If Min-jae has big ambitions then it will be better for him to play on a bigger stage," said his central defence partner Kim Young-gwon, who has won two Asian Champions League titles and six Chinese championships with China's Guangzhou Evergrande.
"Of course, China is good but I think it would be better for him to play on the bigger stage that is Europe."
Kwon Kyung-won, who also plays in the Chinese Super League for Tianjin, gave similar advice.
"I thought that he was going to China but then I heard good news and I hope he can make the better choice," said Kwon.
The players were repeating the sentiment expressed on social media back in Korea as fans urged Kim, whose nickname stems from his powerful physique, to choose England.
Since moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, Son has turned into a global star, becoming the highest-scoring Asian player in Premier League history and also shining in the Champions League.
However, the Chinese Super League is also attractive to Asian players because of its high wages and proximity to home.

SAO PAULO/RIO DE JANEIRO (REUTERS) - A woman has accused Brazilian footballer Neymar of raping her in Paris, according to a Sao Paulo police report seen by Reuters, alleging that the world-renowned sports star drunkenly assaulted her at an upmarket hotel in the French capital.
The accusation was the latest blow for the Brazilian, who earlier this week was stripped of the captaincy of the national team and has seen his international reputation suffer amid incidents of indiscipline.
Neymar's representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Globo website, which first reported the news, said a representative for Neymar declined to comment, awaiting details of the allegations.
Neymar's father, Neymar Sr, said in a local TV interview: "If public opinion is not cleared up, and if we can't show the truth rapidly, this will snowball.
"If we have to show Neymar's WhatsApps and the conversations with this girl, we will, because it is clear that it was a trap."
He added that they were living "difficult moments".
According to the police report, the unnamed woman told investigators in Sao Paulo that she had met Neymar on Instagram and he suggested they meet in Paris, where he plays for Paris St Germain.
Neymar's assistant sent her plane tickets and on May 15, she checked in to the Hotel Sofitel Paris Arc Du Triomphe, according to her account.
The Sofitel hotel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The woman told police that Neymar arrived at the hotel that night "apparently drunk", and that they talked and "caressed".
"However, at some point, Neymar became aggressive, and through violence, practised sexual intercourse against the will of the victim," the police report says.
The woman told police she returned home to Brazil two days later without telling French police about the alleged rape because she was "emotionally shaken and afraid to register the facts in another country," according to the report.
Neymar is currently in Brazil, training with the national team ahead of this month's Copa America.
Last week, the country's football federation replaced him as captain for the tournament with his Paris St Germain team-mate Dani Alves.
Last month May, Neymar was banned for three matches by the French football authorities for hitting a fan after PSG's French Cup final loss to Rennes, and was also reportedly involved in a dressing-room fracas with his PSG team mates.
Paris St Germain did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Brazil's football federation (CBF) declined to comment.

BARCELONA (Reuters) - Uefa proposals to change part of the Champions League format would be "catastrophic" for soccer but Fifa's plans to overhaul the Club World Cup will be a boon for the sport, LaLiga president Javier Tebas told Reuters on Thursday (March 14).
Tebas lashed out at changes he said Europe's governing body is considering making to the Champions League, saying they would damage domestic competitions.
Accusing Uefa and the European Club Association (ECA) of plotting in secret, Tebas said the body wanted to play European games on weekends rather than in mid-week and expand the group stage to four groups of eight teams, rather than the current format of eight groups of four sides.
"Uefa and the ECA are negotiating behind closed doors so that the others don't know about the reforms which put national leagues in danger," said Tebas in an exclusive interview to Reuters.
"They are making reforms to the Champions League which are very dangerous for football. It's a model which is very damaging for national leagues and also for them, as they don't understand business."
Uefa did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tebas earlier this year made headlines for attempting to switch a LaLiga game between Barcelona and Girona to Miami, a move which was opposed by Fifa.
While he remains committed to taking domestic league games abroad to widen LaLiga's global appeal, Tebas said his priority was stopping Uefa's proposed changes.
"Playing a game in Miami is much less important to LaLiga than the catastrophic reforms of Uefa and the ECA," he said.
"Fifa has been transparent in the last few weeks and changed its position so we support them (in their Club World Cup plans), meanwhile Uefa and ECA are doing the opposite and we are very worried about that and don't support them."
Fifa's ruling council meets on Friday in Miami to discuss and vote on president Gianni Infantino's plans for the revamped Club World Cup, which would take place in 2021, replacing the Confederations Cup.
The new-look competition would see 24 teams taking part instead of the current, annual tournament between six continental champions and an invited team, which has been dominated by the winners of the Champions League since 2013.
Tebas initially opposed Infantino's plan for an annual, expanded Club World Cup, calling it "irresponsible" last year. But he said the Spanish league and other major European leagues have radically shifted their position on it.
"In the last year Fifa has made some changes and we are on the path to a good Club World Cup which fits well into the calendar and can be supported by national leagues," Tebas said.
"It still needs to be polished but they are discussing distributing the money more evenly to smaller leagues and that's very important. Fifa have also been more transparent about it.
"They've also committed to playing it every four years which affects national leagues a lot less."
The proposed shake up to the tournament has been rejected by Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin and the ECA chief Andrea Agnelli, who is also the chairman of Juventus.
The Fifa council in Miami will also explore the possibility of expanding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from 32 to 48 teams, which could see the number of host countries also increase.
The tournament will take place between November and December rather than the traditional slot of June and July due to Qatar's scorching summer temperatures, which is set to disrupt domestic leagues across Europe and around the world.
"We always opposed the change of the dates and now LaLiga is preparing ourselves for the break in the season," Tebas said.
"We also must decide what we do with all the players that are not going to the World Cup, of which there are many, not just in Spain but around the world and who didn't figure in decisions like this.
"We'll have to wait and see what Fifa decides but in principle, we at the Spanish league are not in favour of increasing the number of teams at the Qatar World Cup or any World Cup."

LONDON â€¢ Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said he was proud of his team despite losing 2-1 at Arsenal on Tuesday. It was the first time the Premier League side played since a plane carrying the club's record signing Emiliano Sala disappeared over the English Channel.
The Argentinian, 28, was on his way to the Welsh capital to join his new team on Jan 21, just two days after completing a Â£15 million (S$26.6 million) move from French Ligue 1 club Nantes.
Ahead of the game, Warnock described the past week as the toughest of his career, but admitted it had been cathartic for the team to play at the Emirates Stadium.
A minute's reflection was held before kick-off and the visiting fans unveiled a banner that read: "We never saw you play and never saw you score, but Emiliano, our beautiful bluebird, we will love you forever more."
Both captains also laid a bouquet of flowers each on the pitch, while Argentina shirts and flags were waved in the away section.
Admitting there were "more important things" than losing a football game, Warnock said: "Tonight in the circumstances, we've only worked on the system for 24 hours.
"They couldn't have given me any more and I'm really proud to be their manager.
"I can't explain really how it has been this week. But you've not wanted to get out of bed because everything was miserable. Nobody could actually do anything about it. It's been really difficult."
He also paid tribute to Sala by confirming the club had no plans to dip into the transfer market again to replace him as "Emiliano was the one I worked on for a couple of months".
While Cardiff will not augment the squad with another striker, Warnock admitted they needed "a couple of defenders to supplement because we are short in numbers".
The away side ultimately were made to pay for defensive lapses despite having been the better side before half-time, with Bobby Reid missing two big chances.
Arsenal finally clicked into gear after the break, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotting home a penalty for his 15th Premier League goal of the season after Sead Kolasinac was tripped in the box.
Alexandre Lacazette then sealed a vital three points as the Gunners bid to finish in the top four.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who came off the bench, nabbed a consolation goal for Warnock's men.
Cardiff defender Sol Bamba told the BBC that some players are now scared to fly, saying: "We travel by plane and some of the lads have been thinking 'I don't want to go on it anymore'.
"The gaffer... and the club have been good in terms of bringing someone in to talk to if we need to."

The result kept Liverpool top of the Premier League on 69 points, just ahead of Manchester City on 68 points after the champions' 1-0 win over West Ham United on Wednesday. Football: Chelsea banned from signing new players for next two transfer windows

PARIS (AFP) - Premier League club Chelsea have been banned from signing new players in the next two transfer windows as punishment for breaking rules on registering underage players, Fifa said on Friday (Feb 22).
It means the club will be unable to make signings until the end of January 2020.
"The Disciplinary Committee sanctioned Chelsea with a ban on registering new players at both national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods," Fifa said in a statement.
In addition, Chelsea were fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$811,000) and given a period of 90 days to regularise the situation of the minor players concerned.
The ban does not prevent players being released by the club and it does not apply to Chelsea's women's and futsal teams.
Chelsea have been given three days to appeal against Fifa's decision.
The move follows a Fifa probe into Chelsea's signing of foreign under-18 players, including the club's former forward Bertrand Traore, a Burkina Faso international who now plays for French Ligue 1 club Lyon.
Traore signed professional forms for Chelsea in 2013 at the age of 18 but was not registered until January the following year.
French website Mediapart, quoting documents from Football Leaks, reported that Fifa had scrutinised 19 Chelsea signings.
Mediapart reported that Fifa found evidence that Chelsea had supplied misleading information about Traore's signing and that he had made more than 20 appearances for the club at different age levels despite not being registered by the Football Association.
Fifa said on Friday it was also fining the Football Association 510,000 Swiss francs for breaking the rules on signing minors.
The world governing body gave the FA a period of six months to update its processes concerning international transfers and the registration of minors.

LEICESTER, England (REUTERS) - Leicester City marked an emotional day for the club on what would have been the birthday of their late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha by beating Bournemouth 2-0 at home in the Premier League on Saturday (March 30).
Goals from captain Wes Morgan, only playing because of Harry Maguire's suspension, and Jamie Vardy inspired the Foxes as they continued their bright start under new manager Brendan Rodgers with a third straight league win.
Central defender Morgan scored in consecutive games for the first time in his Leicester career, although there may have been a touch of fortune about his deflection which went in off the post from Ben Chilwell's 11th minute shot.
An entertaining match saw both teams' top strikers, Vardy and Callum Wilson, miss chances but Leicester, increasingly dominant, deserved the spoils when Vardy headed home his fifth goal in five games eight minutes from time.
It felt a fitting way for Leicester fans to honour Srivaddhanaprabha, their much-loved Thai owner who died in a helicopter accident after a game in October, on what would have been his 61st birthday.
Before the game, his image flashed up on the big screen at the King Power Stadium along with the words "Always in our hearts" and Srivaddhanaprabha's son, club chairman Aiyawatt, was introduced to the crowd.
In the 61st minute of the match, the fans also rose to applaud his memory, singing "Vichai had a dream."

Leicester had also arranged for fans to be given free cake and beer to mark the day and the home players responded with a fine performance.
"I thought we were excellent. We had to work hard, it was a real good test, we were outstanding on the back of the international break," said Rodgers.
"Our pressing was excellent, the boys are understanding tactically how we want to press and the importance of that... We had 18 shots on goal, which is a real positive."
The Northern Irishman also said he was also impressed with the contribution of Vardy, who has scored four times in four games since Rodgers took over the managerial reins from Claude Puel.

Belarus suffered their third straight loss and are in last place, having scored only one goal.
"It was a solid performance on which we can build. We want to develop as a team," said Germany assistant coach Marcus Sorg, who replaced Joachim Loew as head coach for the game.
Loew was briefly hospitalised days ago following a sports injury.
"The win was above everything. We had to overcome some challenges against a very defensive opponent. Overall, we did it well," said Sorg, who will also be in charge in Tuesday's qualifier against Estonia.
Earlier on Saturday, Northern Ireland came from a goal down to beat Estonia 2-1 in Tallin.
Conor Washington cancelled out the hosts' lead through Konstantin Vassiljev's low first half free kick and fellow substitute Josh Magennis completed the turnaround in the 80th minute to keep Northern Ireland top of the standings.
They next travel to Belarus on Tuesday.

Two goals from Wilfried Zaha, another from Michy Batshuayi and a penalty from Luka Milivojevic inflicted a fourth consecutive league defeat on Leicester - their worst run since 2000.
But it was the manner of the performance that will have most alarmed Puel, with two goals conceded late on to set sections of the crowd booing.
By contrast, 71-year-old Roy Hodgson was in delighted mood as he officially became the oldest ever Premier League manager.
Leicester conceded the first goal for the 19th time this season when Batshuayi was hit by James McArthur's shot, the ball ricocheting past Kasper Schmeichel at great pace. It was the Belgian's first Premier League goal in 19 months.
Although Evans responded with his first goal for Leicester, after 64 minutes, Palace quickly restored their lead with a finish from close-in by Zaha, who was returning from suspension.
Milivojevic put the game beyond doubt with a spot kick after 81 minutes after Evans, making an eventful 250th appearance in the Premier League, fouled Jeffrey Schlupp.
Zaha added his second goal, and Palace's fourth, late on after mistakes by Harry Maguire and Schmeichel.
Interviewed on television immediately after the game, Zaha appeared surprised when James Tomkins was awarded the man-of-the-match award. Asked to present it, Zaha joked: "Oh wow, really? Okay."
The win put Palace six points clear of the relegation zone as they moved one place and two points behind 12th-placed Leicester.

Football: Japan coach disappointed but pleased with progress at Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu was naturally disappointed that his side missed out on a winning a fifth Asian Cup title on Friday (Feb 1) but believes the improvement of the squad augurs well for the future.
The Samurai Blue went into the final as warm favourites to clinch the continental crown but went two goals down in the first half an hour before running out 3-1 losers to 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar.
Moriyasu, who took over after last year's run to the round of 16 at the World Cup, had made it clear throughout their time in the United Arab Emirates that his squad was a work in progress.
"The goal was to be champions so I'm disappointed," he said. "But I feel proud at how we developed under pressure. We had a mix of youth and experience and our seven matches we showed development against teams playing different styles.
"I wasn't to thank my experienced players and I hope that today's result makes the younger players hungry for success.
"I think this tournament will be a base to rebuild the Japan team. It's my job to oversee the process but I want the players to be proud of what we have done in this tournament."
Moriyasu blamed himself for Qatar's first goal and said once Japan conceded the second, it was always going to be tough to get back into the match.

"We made a poor start. We couldn't get into our rhythm. We conceded the first goal because there was a mis-match between the Japan and Qatar systems," he said.
"We expected Qatar to play three (central defenders) and I think it's my fault that the players weren't able to express themselves.
"We were better in attack in the second half and we had the chances to tie the game but the Qatar defence was very tight."
Moriyasu said the players had arrived with different levels of fitness from various leagues around the world and he had been impressed by how the squad had progressed throughout the tournament.
"One of our goals was to improve with each match," he said.
"I think in those terms, the players really tried expressed our plan on the pitch."

BUENOS AIRES (REUTERS) - Argentina's World Cup-winning captain Diego Maradona was recovering in hospital on Saturday (Jan 12) after successfully undergoing a routine operation for stomach bleeding, his lawyer said.
The 58-year old former Boca Juniors and Napoli player discovered the problem in early January during a check-up at a hospital in Olivos, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
The operation, to stem bleeding caused by a hernia, was not complicated but aimed to resolve what one source told Reuters were "inconveniences" caused by the issue.
"Diego Maradona's surgical procedure is over," his lawyer Matias Morla said on Twitter. "Thank God everything went perfectly."
Maradona has suffered frequent periods in hospital over the years, often due to the extravagant lifestyle that helped make him one of the most admired players of the 20th century. He last fell ill at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he fainted in an executive box at the Argentina-Nigeria group-stage game.
Maradona was taken to hospital in 2004 with severe heart and respiratory problems linked to cocaine use. He later underwent drug rehabilitation in Cuba and Argentina before a stomach-stapling operation in 2005 helped him lose weight.
In 2007, he checked himself into a clinic in Buenos Aires to help him overcome alcohol-abuse problems. In recent months he has walked with the aid of crutches due to problems with his knees.
Doctors discovered the bleeding shortly before Maradona was due to fly to Mexico, where he is coach of second-division side Dorados de Sinaloa.
He would return to lead the club for a second season as soon as his recuperation was complete, the lawyer said. "Now we wait for the recovery so Diego can return to work as soon as possible," he added.

Media back home, including daily Folha and website Terra, also took on a similar tone, branding the Brazil international a "coward" and "rebellious adolescent" and "appears incapable of dealing with criticism, of dealing with frustrations".

(REUTERS) - English Premier League side Chelsea have filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a transfer ban imposed by world football governing body Fifa, the CAS said on Friday (June 7).
The Europa League champions were sanctioned in February for breaching rules regarding the international transfer and registration of players under 18. They were also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$825,160).
The transfer ban prevents Chelsea from signing players in the close season and in the January transfer window in 2020 and CAS said it had registered the club's appeal, which could be considered just by written submissions.
"Following the hearing, if one is held... the panel deliberates and then issues its decision in the form of an Arbitral Award," the CAS statement read.
"It is not possible to say at this time when the Arbitral Award will be issued."
Chelsea had initially appealed against Fifa's ban in April and Fifa's Appeal Committee partially upheld the appeal, allowing the London club to register youth players during the period.
The club refuted Fifa's findings and had said last month they would appeal against the decision to the CAS.

LONDON â€¢ Nigel Clough managed to retain his sense of humour after Burton's 9-0 trouncing by Manchester City, stating his hope that Pep Guardiola had "more than one glass" of wine on offer for the post-match drink.
The third-tier side's heavy loss in the League Cup semi-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday ended their hopes of reaching the final, yet he remained light-hearted when asked what his opposite number told him at full-time.
"He said, 'Come in for a glass of wine'. I hope he's got more than a glass," said the visiting manager, who insists his team will use the return leg in a fortnight to celebrate reaching the last four.
"Do I wish we hadn't played? Not at all, we have made history in getting this far. It wasn't about tonight, it was about the achievement of getting here. We kept going right to the end, the City fans were shouting, 'We want 10'. And we stopped them, that's a positive for us."
Gabriel Jesus struck four goals as Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez were also on target against Clough's League One side, with victory leaving their visit to the Pirelli Stadium on Jan 23 a mere formality.
City manager Guardiola said his team's merciless approach in the game was a form of respect for their opponents and the competition.
City were 4-0 up at half-time but continued to rip apart their vastly outclassed opponents as they ran up the biggest margin of victory in an English Cup semi-final.
"If you forget to continue (attacking) you don't have respect for your opponent or for the competition," said the Spaniard.

Burton's 9-0 loss is the heaviest League Cup defeat by any side since Liverpool defeated Fulham 10-0 in the second round in September 1986. It is also the largest margin of defeat in the semi-finals of the competition.

"We spoke about it at half-time, to try to score more goals. That is the best way to respect the competition and opponent. The best way is to do what you have to do.
"The difference between the Premier League teams and League One teams, of course the quality of the players no doubt about that, but especially the rhythm. When you have high intensity and rhythm for 90 minutes, the physicality is higher and we scored quickly."
Guardiola also praised the club's achievement in reaching the last four, a run which saw them beat Premier League side Burnley and Championship teams Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough.
"Burton have had an incredible tournament. They have to be so proud, they did so well," he said.
Clough, son of Nottingham Forest's late European Cup-winning manager Brian Clough, added that he was not surprised at the outcome because of "the gulf between the two teams".
City were rightly lauded by Clough for their technical class and football rooted in total adventure but their work rate was also of the highest order.
They can outrun opponents as well as outpass them. They have the strength in depth to make changes, with only four regular first-teamers starting, and still be far too good for their opposition.
Ilkay Gundogan was doing what he does best, spraying around some exquisite passes when given time.
David Silva was gliding around, passing and moving, finding room and friendly feet, small but perfectly performing.
De Bruyne was supposedly easing his way back to full fitness but was in full Rolls-Royce mode between the boxes for an hour.
There had to be some sympathy for Burton's players facing such superior opposition. They had desperately wanted to cherish the memories of this League Cup semi-final and maybe, in time, they will.
Not at the final whistle on Wednesday, though. When Mahrez prodded in the ninth goal in the 83rd minute, they were just glad a 10th was not forthcoming.
