Football: 'We want Messi to always be at Barca', says club president Bartomeu

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has said he plans to offer Lionel Messi a new contract in the hope the Argentinian will stay at the club his whole career.
Messi's current deal runs until 2021, the same year he turns 34, but the Argentinian has been in brilliant form again this season.
He has 42 goals for club and country while his 32 scored in La Liga have propelled Barca to within touching distance of their fourth league title in five years.
"We would like to renew his contract, that's the idea," Bartomeu told ESPN in an interview published on Friday (April 5).
"I believe he still has many years in front of him and in the coming months we will sit down with him so that he has many more years at Barcelona."
Messi joined Barcelona's academy aged 13 and is one of the few players left from Pep Guardiola's iconic team that won the treble in 2009.
In total, he has won nine La Liga titles with the club, as well as four in the Champions League and six in the Copa del Rey.
"Messi is a one-club man," Bartomeu added. "It's more than what he does on the pitch, his relationship with Barca will last forever.
"I use the example of Pele, who was always at Santos. We want Messi to always be at Barca, whether that's playing on the pitch or being linked to the club (after he retires)."

Football: Leeds manager Bielsa admits sending spy to Derby ahead of match

(REUTERS) - Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has admitted sending a member of his coaching staff to spy on Derby County ahead of their Championship (second-tier) match on Friday (Jan 11), which Leeds won 2-0.
Derby said earlier that local police had spoken to a person acting suspiciously outside their training ground on Thursday.
"It's true there was someone from Leeds United. I am responsible for this incident," former Argentina manager Bielsa told Sky Sports before the game.
"Yesterday I talked to (Derby manager) Frank Lampard and he told me that for him I didn't respect the fair play rules. I have a different point of view on it but the important thing is what Frank Lampard and Derby County think.
"I am the only (one) responsible for it because I didn't ask for the permission of Leeds United to do that. Without trying to find a justification, I've been using this kind of practice since the qualifications for the World Cup with Argentina. This is not illegal.
"For some people it's the wrong thing to do and for other people it's not the wrong thing to do," added the Argentine, who managed his country's national team from 1998-2004.
Lampard was critical of Bielsa’s actions.
“At least on a sportsman’s level it’s bad in my opinion,” he said.
“If we’re going to start talking about culturally I did it somewhere else and it was fine then that doesn’t work for me because I don’t believe it is fine on that level,” the former England and Chelsea midfielder added.
“It’s disrupted our build-up to this game.” Lampard said someone was also spotted watching his team training before they played Leeds in August.
“We had somebody the day before our first game against them which we lost 4-1,” he said. “Now Leeds can beat you 4-1 – they’re a fantastic team – but we had someone in the bushes that day.” Sixth-placed Derby are eight points behind leaders Leeds.
Derbyshire Police said they had spoken to a man at the training ground.
"A man was found at the perimeter fence of Moor Farm and was spoken to," they said on Twitter.
"Despite media reports, no damage to the fence was found, and the man was stopped outside the grounds. No arrests were made and the man was sent on his way."
Derby said they were in discussion with Leeds club officials in relation to this incident.
A spokesman for the English Football League said: "We are aware of the reports in relation to an incident at the training ground of Derby County. It is, of course, up to Derby County as to how they progress this matter but as of yet we have received no complaint or contact from the Club." Tottenham Hotspur's Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino, who played under Bielsa for Espanyol and the national team, was asked whether he would consider spying on opponents.
"I played for him, I learned a lot from him, the good and the not so good," Pochettino told reporters ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester United.
Pochettino said he would not adopt similar tactics to prepare for the United game.
"No, no, but it's nothing wrong to try to find a bit more information about what the opposition is doing. It used to happen in Argentina, not only Marcelo.
"Many managers in Argentina used to send people to watch the training sessions. Here it maybe is a little bit weird but in Argentina it happened. It's not a big deal what happened."
Derby, sixth in the Championship standings, are eight points behind Leeds.

Fandi rues missed chances in 1-1 draw

Fandi rues missed chances in 1-1 draw
It was encouraging that his team struck back immediately after falling behind, but Singapore's 1-1 draw with Hong Kong in the Asian Football Confederation Under-23 Championship qualifier yesterday still left a sour taste in coach Fandi Ahmad's mouth.
The national Under-22 side carved out chances but were not clinical enough to make them count in their opening Group G game at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
"We are quite disappointed with the result," Fandi, 56, lamented.
"I thought we could have won the game because we had more chances. We had good shots at goal, but the goalkeeper saved or we hit the post."
The Singaporeans dominated most of the game, creating a host of chances from their passing moves but were unable to find the net.
In the 29th minute, captain Joshua Pereira arrived at the far post to meet midfielder Hami Syahin's cross from the right, but he blasted over the bar.
Then in the 42nd minute, striker Ikhsan Fandi broke clear of the defence - only for the goalkeeper to deny him.
Against the run of play, Hong Kong defender Tsui Wang Kit scored in the 52nd minute.
But, within a minute, Fandi's men equalised through centre-back Lionel Tan, who netted from close range after fellow defender Irfan Fandi had headed on Hami's 53rd-minute free kick.
Hami also saw one of his crosses rebound off the post in the second half.
On the wasted opportunities, Fandi added: "In the first half alone, we created three chances. In terms of chances, we created more than them. They had one or two, but we had a mistake amongst our defenders and they scored a goal.
"But we kept going at them. It's a very, very tough game, trying to adapt to the situation here. We are still quite happy with a point, but we could have done better than this."
Singapore will meet North Korea, who defeated hosts Mongolia 1-0 in the other Group G game yesterday, in their second match tomorrow.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the Finals in Thailand in January. The top-three finishers will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Fandi concedes that he has little knowledge of the North Koreans, but he wants his players to go all out to get a result.
He said: "We don't know much about DPR Korea. They are very aggressive, very fit. What we can do is to watch them, but I hope we can find more videos of them.
"I know they have been training very hard for three weeks, that's what their coach said.
"We must be prepared; whatever comes, we have to face it. They are a very strong team.
"We are going into this game as underdogs but, hopefully, we can do better and get the three points."

Football: Manchester City gain Tottenham revenge to remain in control of EPL title race

Football: Manchester City gain Tottenham revenge to remain in control of EPL title race

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City exacted some measure of revenge on Tottenham for their Champions League exit as Phil Foden's first Premier League goal earned a 1-0 win to move them back top of the table on Saturday (April 20).
Pep Guardiola's men edge one point ahead of Liverpool once more with four games of a titanic title race left for both sides.
For all their Champions League heroics to get to the semi-finals this season, Tottenham still have much to do to qualify for the competition next season as they could easily end the Easter weekend outside the top four should Arsenal and Chelsea beat Crystal Palace and Burnley at home respectively.
City's quest for an unprecedented quadruple of trophies was ended by defeat on away goals to Spurs on Wednesday, despite winning a thrilling quarter-final, second leg 4-3.
However, they remain on course for a first ever treble of domestic trophies in England as they survived a nervy finale thanks to another blistering start.
City have made a habit of firing out of the blocks this season and just like in midweek to kickstart a kamikaze encounter, they struck within five minutes.
Foden was making just his second Premier League start and immediately justified Guardiola's faith in the 19-year-old by heading home Sergio Aguero's nodded pass across goal from Bernardo Silva's cross.

However, history could easily have repeated itself as after four goals were shared in the opening 11 minutes on Wednesday, Spurs had numerous chances to strike back.
Son Heung-min had already forced Ederson in a smart save from a narrow angle before City scored and the Brazilian goalkeeper had to rush from his goal once more to deny Christian Eriksen an equaliser on 15 minutes.
Two minutes later the Dane played provider with a glorious ball to free Son in behind the City defence.
However, the South Korean, who scored twice in midweek to end City's European dreams for another season, was caught up just in time by Aymeric Laporte, who made a perfectly timed last-ditch tackle.
Despite Tottenham's chances on the break, it was the hosts who were still dominating territory and possession with Bernardo Silva a constant threat.
The Portuguese's outstanding season was rewarded as he was named alongside teammates Aguero and Raheem Sterling in the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award and Jan Vertonghen was fortunate to escape without conceding a penalty when he appeared to trip Silva inside the area.
Spurs were without captain Hugo Lloris through injury and his understudy Paulo Gazzaniga looked nervous early on, but the Argentinian goalkeeper got down to save Silva's next effort.
Guardiola's decision to leave Kevin de Bruyne out for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final between the sides was doubly questioned after the Belgian bagged a brilliant hat-trick of assists in midweek.
However, Guardiola's reasoning for being cautious with his playmaker after an injury-plagued season was understandable as de Bruyne limped off again just before the break and may well now miss the rest of the campaign.
Both sides suffered from their midweek exertions and the blazing sun as the second-half meandered along at a much more subdued pace.
Spurs had a big penalty appeal of their own turned down when Kyle Walker handled inside the area against his former club.
Sterling briefly thought he had completed a hat-trick in stoppage time on Wednesday with the goal that would have sent City through to the Champions League last four until VAR ruled the goal out for offside.
And the England international could not believe his misfortune once more when Gazzaniga stuck out an outstretched leg to prevent Sterling sealing a vital three points from Leroy Sane's cut-back.
Instead, City had to suffer through the closing stages knowing one mistake could cost them the title.
But they held on as Spurs suffered an eighth straight away defeat to English opposition.

Football: Stunning free kick sends Qatar into Asian Cup quarter-finals

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Qatar wrestled their way past Iraq into the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 22) when a stunning free kick from the son of a former Iraqi international gave them a 1-0 victory at Al Nahyan Stadium.
Defender Bassam Al-Rawi, whose father Hisham played for Iraq in the 1990s, found the net in the 62nd minute to decide a scrappy contest in favour of the 2022 World Cup hosts and set up a date with South Korea across town at Zayed Sports City on Friday.
Iraq, the 2007 champions, gave their all but paid the price for failing to take their chances and departed the continental tournament before the quarter-final stage for the first time since 1972.
Because of the current political and economic rift between the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, Iraq were cheered on by a noisy majority of the 14,000 crowd in the boutique ground, with barely a handful supporting the Maroons.
Qatar, who scored 10 goals and conceded none in the group stage, made the brighter start and left back Abdelkarim Hassan hit the bar in the fourth minute.
That was pretty much the extent of their threat on goal until he had a shot deflected onto the post just before the break, though, as the Qataris were muscled out of the game in midfield.
Iraq fared little better at the other end with Mohanad Ali having their best chance of breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute as the 2007 champions started to make some progress with the ball over the top of the Qatari defence.
The young striker raced through on goal but Saad Al Sheeb bravely dived at his feet, with the goalkeeper getting a boot to the face for his efforts.
A defensive error put Qatar winger Akram Afif through early in the second half but his touch woefully betrayed him, and the ball trickled harmlessly to Iraq keeper Jalal Hassan.
It was a foul on the dangerous Afif on the lefthand corner of the box that led to the breakthrough just after the hour mark, Bassam stepping up and curling the ball over the wall and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
The Qataris were charged with confidence by the goal and poured forward to pepper Hassan's goal with shots in the next 10 minutes before Iraq regained their grip on the midfield.
Iraq defender Ali Adnan went close to matching Bassam's effort from a free kick slightly further out in the 78th minute and twice Iraqi forwards flashed headers wide as they lay siege to the Qatar goal in the last few minutes.
But the Qataris held them out to register a fourth clean sheet in four matches at the tournament, almost outnumbering their small band of fans when they celebrated with them at the end.

Football: Vietnam beat Malaysia at home to claim AFF Suzuki Cup for the second time

HANOI (AFP/BERNAMA) - Malaysia coach Tan Cheng Hoe admitted that the early goal by Vietnam in the second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup final on Saturday (Dec 15) "destroyed" all his plans for the game against Vietnam.
That goal by Nguyen Anh Duc proved decisive as Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at My Dinh National Stadium to lift the Asean Football Federation trophy for the second time.
The Vietnamese had allowed a two-goal lead to slip in a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday.
But Vietnam were determined to press home their home advantage early on and Duc restored their advantage when he volleyed home from close range after only six minutes.
However, they had to survive several scares as goalkeeper Dang Van Lam made a series of fine saves to preserve Vietnam's lead, with Park Hang-seo's men winning 3-2 on aggregate to claim the Asean regional title for the first time since 2008.
Vietnam had the benefit of two away goals from the first leg and they made an excellent start in Hanoi, taking the lead when Nguyen Quang Hai's chip from the left found Duc, whose volley was too powerful for goalkeeper Farizal Marlias to keep out of his net.
Mohamadou Sumareh went close to levelling for Harimau Malaya in the 11th minute with a clever back-heel which went narrowly wide.
Do Hung Dung should have done better for Vietnam in the 33rd minute after he received the ball unmarked on the edge of the box, only to shoot wide.
The hosts had to be indebted to a stellar display from Lam, who was called into action just before half-time to tip Syahmi Safari's first-time effort over his crossbar.
He showed fine reflexes again after the break to claw Sumareh's header away to safety, before making another fine save to keep out Safawi Rasid's free kick.
Ten players - six Vietnamese and four Malaysians - were booked in the scrappy encounter, which culminated in the dismissal of Shahrul Saad in added time when he received his second yellow card after committing a foul on the halfway line to snuff out a counter-attack.
Hai, who scored three goals and was an ever-present for Vietnam in the tournament, was named the Most Valuable Player as Malaysia's dream of their second title since 2010 ended.
Tan, in his post-match press conference, said letting in early goals against Vietnam in three encounters against them in the AFF Suzuki Cup campaign this time around was something which should not have happened.
"Indeed, I am aware that the three times we met Vietnam, we let in an early goal. When it happened tonight, it affected the players' confidence. In the previous match (on Dec 11), we did a comeback, but this time, the players could not score and some scoring opportunities went begging."

Messi notches 400 Laliga goals

BARCELONA • Lionel Messi has been called many things in his career, from genius to greatest of all time (Goat) and, on Sunday, he added "from another galaxy" to the ever-growing list of superlatives tossed his way.
The Barcelona talisman terrorised Eibar to rack up his 400th LaLiga goal in just 435 games - a remarkable ratio coach Ernesto Valverde labelled as "monstrous".
He drove the ball home after being teed up by Luis Suarez, who added a brace either side of Messi extending his record as LaLiga's all-time goalscorer, with the Spanish champions taking apart their opponents 3-0 at home for a five-point cushion at the top of the table.
Incredibly, it was one of his quieter nights at the Nou Camp despite increasing his lead over rival and the league's second-highest scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, to 89 goals.
While Ronaldo, now at Juventus, still owns a better goals-to-game ratio, with his 311 strikes coming in 292 matches, the night was all about Messi even though Suarez and Philippe Coutinho also picked up the plaudits.
Valverde told reporters: "It's easy to say, but you have to score them one after the other, it's a long-term job. His numbers are stratospheric, incredible. Messi is an extraordinary player because he is not only a scorer. It's everything that he creates around him too."
Barcelona saluted his feat, tweeting crown and goat emojis and calling him "his goat-ness", while their beaten opponents also tweeted a show of respect for his achievement.
Messi is now only the second player to notch 400 or more goals in European football's top-five leagues after Ronaldo (409), but has reached the milestone having played 63 fewer games.
In Seville, Real Madrid beat Betis 2-1 courtesy of a last-gasp free kick from Dani Ceballos, who came back to haunt his former club off the bench, to remain 10 points adrift of Barcelona.
Luka Modric had opened the scoring but Betis were in the ascendancy after Sergio Canales poked in a second-half equaliser against his old side.
But Ceballos, who left Betis for Madrid two years ago and was heavily booed after being introduced, snatched the dramatic victory two minutes from time.
Although he scored on his first free-kick attempt for Real, the former Betis academy product admitted to mixed feelings afterwards as "he did not expect this reception".
He told TV channel Movistar: "It's a field that has given me everything. I'm happy, but I leave with the bittersweet feeling of not having the affection of (those) who were my fans for so long."

Football: England thrash Montenegro after early scare

PODGORICA (REUTERS) - England recovered from an early scare in Montenegro as Ross Barkley scored twice in a clinical 5-1 victory to continue their strong start to the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign on Monday (March 25).
Marko Vesovic raised the decibel level in the stadium when he fired the hosts in front against the run of play in the 17th minute, but England were unfazed and went ahead by halftime thanks to goals by Michael Keane and Barkley.
Montenegro were still a threat early in the second half and Fatos Beciraj could have equalised, but when Barkley drilled in his second just before the hour the result was a formality.
Skipper Harry Kane tapped home the fourth goal from Raheem Sterling's cut back after a swift counter-attack and Sterling slid home in the 81st minute to complete the rout.
England, now unbeaten in 32 World Cup and European qualifiers, have scored 10 goals in two games in Group A having thrashed Czech Republic 5-0 with a Sterling hat-trick on Friday.

Blues expect hard time at Fulham after Ranieri exit
LONDON • Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has backed the sacked Claudio Ranieri to come back stronger, at the same time warning his players to expect a strong reaction today from Fulham following the departure of his fellow Italian.
Fulham, stuck in the relegation zone, dismissed Ranieri on Thursday and appointed Scott Parker as caretaker manager.
"I'm really very sorry," Sarri said of his compatriot. "But I know very well his character, so I know very well that we will see him very soon, on another bench.
"Usually, when there is a change of coach, there is a reaction. And so we have to front the reaction.
"Then it's difficult for us to prepare the match, to know their new systems and ideas. They also have opportunities to save themselves, so we'll have to play a very difficult match, a derby."
The Premier League match at Craven Cottage today is Chelsea's third in eight days after their penalty shoot-out defeat in the League Cup final by Manchester City and Wednesday's league win over Tottenham.
The Chelsea boss refused to confirm whether Kepa Arrizabalaga will return to the team today after the controversial goalkeeper was cast into exile following his Wembley mutiny. The Spaniard was fined over his refusal to be substituted in the closing moments against City.
Willy Caballero started against Tottenham, although Sarri insisted after the match that Kepa, the former Athletic Bilbao star, remained his first choice.
Sarri said the two goalkeepers will share duties in the next two games, with one playing today and the other in Thursday's Europa League last-16, first-leg clash with Dynamo Kiev.

Premier League Sacking Season kicks-off as Fulham Fires Jokanovic

According to the reports, Ranieri, has signed a multi-year contract with the club. Fulham, spending an astounding £100m on new players this summer, are still placed bottom after conceding a league-high 31 goals, having only managed five points from their 12 games this season. A probable reason why Jokanovic was fired without a second thought.

MADRID (AFP) - Mohamed Salah expressed his delight at playing a full role in Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League final victory over Tottenham on Saturday (June 1), after injury ruined his night against Real Madrid a year ago.
The Egyptian went off injured and in tears during the first half of last year's final after hurting his shoulder during the 3-1 loss to Real.
"Everyone is happy now, I am glad to play the second final in a row and play 90 minutes finally," Salah told BT Sport.
"Everyone did his best today, no great individual performances today, all the team was unbelievable."
Salah scored the second quickest goal in the final of the modern Champions League, blasting home a penalty less than two minutes into the match following a handball by Moussa Sissoko.
"I have sacrificed a lot for my career, to come from a village to go to Cairo, and to be an Egyptian at this level is unbelievable for me," said Salah.
Divock Origi, who scored the winning goal against Barcelona in Liverpool's remarkable semi-final comeback, sealed victory three minutes from time with a superb low finish.

"This is a moment I'll never forget, it's a great moment for the club and for the city," Origi told BFM.

Football: Burnley boost survival hopes with 2-0 win over Wolves

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Burnley moved five points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone after an early Conor Coady own goal and a late Dwight McNeil strike gave them a 2-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday (March 30).
The result left Burnley 17th on 33 points from 32 games, five more than 18th-placed Cardiff City who have two games in hand and host sixth-placed Chelsea on Sunday.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche praised McNeil and was also upbeat about his team's chances of staying in the top flight.
"Dwight has got real quality and he has shown that again with a goal and an assist," Dyche told the BBC.
"He is 19 and delivering in the Premier League. He's certainly laid down a marker. He will be aware of some of the basics he still has to learn but I'm enjoying what he is doing.
"We have got 21 points since Christmas - that's a healthy return. That should leave us in good confidence."
Asked if Wolves had next week's FA Cup semi-final with Watford was on their minds, Coady said: "No, not at all. It's a good game coming up but we're not thinking about it.
"We have it all to play for in the Premier League. We want to finish as high as we can."
Wolves stayed seventh on 44 points from 31 games. They are ahead of Leicester City, who have played a game more, on goal difference.
Coady netted his third own-goal of the season in the second minute when he slid goalwards in an attempt to block Chris Wood's shot which struck the post and rebounded into the back of the net off the Wolves captain.
The visitors had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Christopher Kavanagh midway through the first half after Jonny Castro's shot struck Burnley striker Ashley Barnes in the arm.
Ivan Cavaleiro squandered a gilt-edged chance to equalise shortly after the break, blazing his shot over the bar after good work by Leander Dendoncker on the right flank.
That miss was punished in the 77th minute, when livewire McNeil picked his spot inside the penalty area and drove a fine shot into the bottom right corner of the net to seal Burnley's victory.

Football: Sarri eyes win streak to avoid Chelsea axe

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri insists he expects to avoid being sacked as Chelsea manager if his side can put together a sustained winning run.
Reports yesterday claimed Sarri will be axed if the Blues lose any of their next three matches.
Sarri faces a crucial seven days as Chelsea face Malmo in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie today, Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday and Tottenham in the Premier League next Wednesday.
Sarri said: "We need to win three, four matches in a row. It's the only solution... There isn't another way. We can only have good performances and results."
The 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United followed the 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City.
Angry Blues fans have demanded the 60-year-old's sacking and started calling for former Chelsea star Frank Lampard to replace him.
But Sarri says he has not spoken to owner Roman Abramovich or influential director Marina Granovskaia this week.
He said: "I have to think that I will be the manager of Chelsea for a long time, otherwise I cannot work. I am not sure (if I will be here for long), but I have to think this.
"Of course in this moment it's very difficult to think we're able to win three, four matches in a row. As you know very well in football everything can change in one day."
But the Italian still refuses to compromise on his possession-based playing style, ridiculed by supporters on Monday.
"The system is a false problem. I know very well that when we lose I have to put a striker on the pitch. When we win I have to put a defender on the pitch. But I want to see football in another way," he said.

Valencia coach unfazed by Europa League 'favourites' Arsenal in semis

Valencia coach unfazed by Europa League 'favourites' Arsenal in semis
VALENCIA • Valencia coach Marcelino has started the mind games by saying Arsenal are "the favourites" in their Europa League semi-final next month.
The Spanish team, owned by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, eased into the Europe's second-tier club competition for the first time in five years - a 2-0 home win over fellow LaLiga side Villarreal on Thursday giving them a resounding 5-1 aggregate scoreline.
Toni Lato and Dani Parejo scored the goals that secured the victory and set up a meeting with Arsenal and Valencia's former coach Unai Emery after the London side won 1-0 at Napoli and 3-0 on aggregate.
Full-back Lato strolled into a gaping hole in defence to volley Valencia in front in the 13th minute at a rain-swept Mestalla to settle the home side, who enjoyed a 3-1 win at Villarreal in the first leg.
The lead was doubled early in the second half with a free kick by captain Parejo, which took a deflection off defender Ramiro Funes Mori.
The only disappointment for Marcelino's side is that their former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin is suspended for the first leg at the Emirates Stadium on May 2 after a late booking for handball.

"We are very excited about the prospect of reaching another final in our centenary year," said Marcelino, whose side will play Barcelona in the King's Cup final on May 25.
"Arsenal have great players and a coach who knows us perfectly well, so they are one of the favourites.
"But, in a semi-final, anything can happen. Perhaps they will be under a bigger obligation to win than us, but we have the same excitement."
Emery coached Valencia between 2008 and 2012, securing three top-three finishes in a row.
He later eliminated Valencia in the 2014 Europa League semi-finals when in charge of Sevilla, who edged into the final on away goals after snatching a 3-3 aggregate draw with a stoppage-time goal.
Valencia striker Santi Mina added: "Arsenal are a very difficult side, but we are Valencia and we can compete with anybody.
"We've already reached the King's Cup final... and we want to give the fans something more to shout about."

LONDON • Michail Antonio has been a familiar foe for Tottenham.
Back in the 2015-16 season, when Spurs were pushing for the Premier League title, it was Antonio who derailed them with the only goal of a 1-0 West Ham win at Upton Park.
Yesterday, the forward struck the first goal by a visiting player to Spurs' new stadium and it was one that stood to damage their hopes of a top-four finish.
Antonio's reward was no more than what West Ham deserved and the 1-0 win served to end the side's woeful recent away run - they had arrived on the back of one point from an available 24.
Spurs could have been forgiven for having one eye on Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first-leg against Ajax but it was alarming to see how flat and laboured they were in the second half.
They looked out on their feet in the closing stages, when West Ham could easily have added to their 67th-minute lead, and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted afterwards that his team were suffering from fatigue.
"We were tired. We knew that it was going to be tough because it was a derby," he said.

"We knew that to compete in the Premier League top four is very tough. First half we deserved it, second half they deserved it.
"Second half they were better. They had more energy than us and we conceded a lot of space for them to run into. We didn't find a way to manage the ball properly.
"But the effort my players are doing is amazing. I still feel proud of them. Sometimes we need to admit it's tough, we didn't score and now we have to move on."
Spurs had won all four matches at their new £1 billion (S$1.76 billion) stadium, and have yet to concede a goal before yesterday. But it was finally the day when their perfect record ended.
More significantly, the loss put a dent in their Champions League qualification hopes.
Tottenham now hold a slim three-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea (67) and are four points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, with both teams in action today.
Manchester United, further back in sixth and six points behind Spurs, host Chelsea as all three teams know they must now take advantage of Spurs' slip.
Pochettino had insisted Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 Uefa Cup was less significant than their top-four challenge. But his team selection told a different story.
The Argentinian rested Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama and Fernando Llorente, but his gamble backfired.
Spurs dominated the first half and could have been ahead had Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen converted their chances.
They were then made to pay as West Ham took the lead after half-time when Antonio lashed past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris following a cross from Marko Arnautovic.
"For us to come here and get the first win is a great achievement," said a beaming Antonio, who did not know that he was the first away player to score at the new stadium.
"I wasn't aware but that's another little mark in history, and I love it."

UAE not pressing panic button despite dismal draw

UAE not pressing panic button despite dismal draw

ABU DHABI • Eight years ago, Japan were held 1-1 by Jordan in their first group-stage game before going on to win the Asian Cup.
Italian Alberto Zaccheroni was the coach of the Blue Samurai then and he is optimistic history will repeat itself for 2019 host the United Arab Emirates.
It was a case of deja vu for the 65-year-old as his UAE side scored a late penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw with Middle East rivals Bahrain at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Substitute Ahmed Khalil smashed home his spot kick after Mohamed Marhoon handled the ball inside the penalty area, cancelling out Mohamed Al Romaihi's 78th-minute opener for Bahrain in the Group A meeting.
The late goal spared the world No. 79 the indignity of losing to a side 34 places below them in the Fifa rankings, but it would have done little to ease the pressure on Zaccheroni, who has come in for criticism throughout his time in charge of the UAE.
"When I was in charge of Japan, we ended with a draw in the first game of the 2011 Asian Cup against Jordan, then we won the tournament," said Zaccheroni. "The same scenario played out today, as we went behind.
"We had our chances but just couldn't take them. We struggled to supply the forwards at times and the players were getting a little frustrated. But we will have to deal with the pressure and be brave."
Without star playmaker Omar Abdulrahman, who was ruled out of the tournament with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, the UAE lacked cohesion and composure in front of goal, with striker Ali Mabkhout missing several chances. The home side paid the price for their profligacy in the 78th minute when Al Romaihi bundled home after his initial header appeared to have crossed the line.
Jordanian referee Adham Makhadmeh then gave the host a lifeline when he pointed to the spot five minutes from time for what appeared to be an unintentional handball by Marhoon.
Khalil, appearing in his 100th international, displayed nerves of steel to smash the spot kick into the top corner.
Bahrain coach Miroslav Soukup refused to criticise the referee after the late setback.
"You could maybe say it was hard luck," said the Czech. "I didn't see it and I haven't seen the video, but the players were saying it wasn't a deliberate handball - so it's bad luck.

Football: England bids farewell to World Cup-winning 'keeper Gordon Banks, mourners gather at Stoke stadium

STOKE-ON-TRENT (REUTERS) - Crowds of mourning fans joined luminaries of English football for a final farewell on Monday (March 4) to Gordon Banks, a steelworker's son who became one of the world's greatest goalkeepers and will be remembered for his miraculous save against Pele.
Teammates from England's 1966 World Cup win and members of former clubs Stoke and Leicester came to join a cortege from the Stoke stadium to the funeral for Banks, who died aged 81 last month.
"He was so humble, honest to God, he didn't really understand what he had achieved in life and why people made such a fuss of him," friend Terry Conroy, who starred with Banks and scored in Stoke's 1972 League Cup win, told Reuters.
Banks was best known for the stunning one-handed save from a Pele bullet header that bounced awkwardly in front of him during England's group-stage game against Brazil at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
"With the luck of the gods, the angle at which I'd managed to lift that ball was perfect, and it ballooned in the air and over the bar," the genial Banks said in one of the many recountings begged by fans and the media.
Footage shows Banks chuckling afterwards, as England's Bobby Moore jokingly chides him for not catching the ball.
His achievements went far further than stopping Pele.

Banks won 73 international caps, played nearly 500 times for Leicester and Stoke and won two League Cups, before a car crash blinded him in one eye.
He remained in Stoke, a former mining and pottery city, where he would watch games, attend charity events and take a weekly walk round Trentham Gardens.
"He donated his tie to a charity event I was involved in and we raised £200 (S$358.44). Such a gentleman," reminisced Phillip Steele, 76, next to a statue of Banks at the hilltop stadium decked in flags, scarves and flowers.

Favourite saves

Some 2,000 fans were at the stadium to watch proceedings on a big screen. Others lined the route of the funeral procession, which was to stop outside the old Victoria Ground where Banks plied his trade before ending at Stoke Minster for a religious service.
Goalkeepers Jack Butland, Joe Hart and Kasper Schmeichel were to be pall-bearers. Fellow World Cup winners Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst were also expected.
In a largely working-class city obsessed with football, Banks was viewed as a reminder of simpler days before the Premier League's mega-millions.
Everyone had their favourite save.
"Mine was a penalty he stopped against Geoff Hurst at Stoke's 1972 League Cup semi-final at West Ham," Conroy said. "If he hadn't saved that, we wouldn't have been in the final and won our first trophy in more than 100 years."
Banks used to pick out a 1963 FA Cup semi-final when Leicester scored with their only shot on goal while he single-handedly thwarted chance after chance for Liverpool.
Born in the northern city of Sheffield, Banks worked as a coal packer and apprentice bricklayer as a teenager before an inauspicious start at Chesterfield's reserves: he let in 122 goals in the 1954-55 season. After military service, he got a first-team contract at Chesterfield - for £7 a week.
Anecdotes from Banks' life tell of a different era to that of today's cosseted players. Before kick-off at the 1966 World Cup semi-final, he ran out of the gum he used to chew to generate spit for his hands - so the England trainer popped out of Wembley and down the road to buy some from a news kiosk just in time to stave off Banks' panic.

Football: Guardiola hopes Champions League pain spurs on Manchester City

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola wants the pain of Manchester City's gut-wrenching Champions League elimination at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur to inspire a charge for an unprecedented domestic treble.
Guardiola's side take on Spurs at the Etihad Stadium again on Saturday (April 20) after VAR ruled out what would have been a stoppage-time winner for City and denied them a place in the last four as they went out on away goals after having already celebrated victory.
Now City, who lifted the League Cup in February, will focus on trying to hold off Liverpool and retain their Premier League title in their final five league games, before taking on Watford in the FA Cup final.
"I don't want the players to forget what they lived through on Wednesday. It will take time, we have to live with that feeling," he said.
"More than 55,000 people happy then devastated in a second. There is not an activity in this world you can put in these limits."
While City now only have domestic matters to concentrate on, leaders Liverpool - who have played a game more - have a Champions League semi-final on the horizon.
But Guardiola was adamant City would gain no advantage from being absent from midweek European action for the remainder of the season.

"I would prefer to be in the semi-finals and the quadruple closer," he said.
"There is no advantage at this stage. In November and December, when you have more games, maybe.
"Like Liverpool went out of both cups early, we played nine or 10 more games. But now at this stage of the season, it isn't any influence on the rest."
Meanwhile former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Guardiola believes his star-studded City side will be a better team for their Champions League exit.
We have to live with these situations, accept them. It will be on our minds but looking back it will help us to move forward," he added.
"A tough night but the day after we move forward. These players have the opportunity to show they can do that.
"They can get back what they deserve, this season or the next or three or four years. They will be in the same position and they'll be luckier and go to the next stages."
